The Notice
墙上的告示
A poor sandal seller sighs at a notice calling for soldiers, and a booming butcher will not let it go. Then they hear a red-faced stranger at an inn.

Hěn jiǔ yǐqián, qiáng shàng yǒu yì zhāng dà gàoshì. Hěn duō rén zài kàn.
Long ago, a big notice went up on the wall. Many people stood reading it.
- Villager 大家快看！告示上说，要兵！
Dàjiā kuài kàn! Gàoshì shàng shuō, yào bīng!
Everyone, look quick! The notice says they need soldiers!
- Villager 黄巾贼来了！他们很坏！我们要有兵！
Huángjīn zéi lái le! Tāmen hěn huài! Wǒmen yào yǒu bīng!
The Yellow Turban rebels are coming! They're bad men! We need soldiers!
- Liu Bei 我也想去……可是，我不行。
Wǒ yě xiǎng qù… Kěshì, wǒ bù xíng.
I want to go too... but I can't.
- Zhang Fei 喂！你！你为什么叹气？
Wèi! Nǐ! Nǐ wèishénme tànqì?
Hey! You! Why are you sighing?
- Liu Bei 我？我没有叹气啊。
Wǒ? Wǒ méiyǒu tànqì a.
Me? I wasn't sighing.
- Zhang Fei 有！我听见了！像一头牛在叫！
Yǒu! Wǒ tīngjiàn le! Xiàng yì tóu niú zài jiào!
Yes, you were! I heard you! You sounded like an ox!
- Liu Bei 哈哈，好吧。我叫刘备。我卖草鞋。
Hāhā, hǎo ba. Wǒ jiào Liú Bèi. Wǒ mài cǎoxié.
Ha ha, all right. I'm Liu Bei. I sell straw sandals.
- Zhang Fei 我叫张飞。我卖肉！我家有一个桃园。
Wǒ jiào Zhāng Fēi. Wǒ mài ròu! Wǒ jiā yǒu yí gè táoyuán.
I'm Zhang Fei. I sell meat! My family has a peach garden.
- Zhang Fei 刘备，说吧！你有手，有脚，为什么不去当兵？
Liú Bèi, shuō ba! Nǐ yǒu shǒu, yǒu jiǎo, wèishénme bú qù dāngbīng?
Come on, Liu Bei, tell me! You have hands and feet. Why don't you join the army?
- Liu Bei 我没有钱，没有朋友，也没有兵。我有草鞋，没有别的。
Wǒ méiyǒu qián, méiyǒu péngyou, yě méiyǒu bīng. Wǒ yǒu cǎoxié, méiyǒu bié de.
I have no money, no friends, and no soldiers. I have sandals, and nothing else.
- Zhang Fei 草鞋？太好笑了！草鞋可以打黄巾贼吗？
Cǎoxié? Tài hǎoxiào le! Cǎoxié kěyǐ dǎ Huángjīn zéi ma?
Sandals? That's so funny! Can sandals beat the Yellow Turbans?
- Liu Bei 可以！我给他们新鞋，他们就跑回家了！
Kěyǐ! Wǒ gěi tāmen xīn xié, tāmen jiù pǎo huíjiā le!
Sure! I'll give them nice new shoes, and they'll run all the way home!
- Zhang Fei 你真好玩！我喜欢你！我们做朋友！
Nǐ zhēn hǎowán! Wǒ xǐhuan nǐ! Wǒmen zuò péngyou!
You're so funny! I like you! Let's be friends!
- Zhang Fei 我没有草鞋，可是我有大声音。你听！
Wǒ méiyǒu cǎoxié, kěshì wǒ yǒu dà shēngyīn. Nǐ tīng!
I don't have sandals, but I have a big voice. Listen!
- Zhang Fei 刘备是我的朋友啊！
Liú Bèi shì wǒ de péngyou a!
Liu Bei is my friend!
- Villager 啊！我的头好疼！鸡也飞了！
Á! Wǒ de tóu hǎo téng! Jī yě fēi le!
Ah! My head hurts! Even the hen flew away!
- Liu Bei 你的声音真大！张飞，你是我的好朋友了。
Nǐ de shēngyīn zhēn dà! Zhāng Fēi, nǐ shì wǒ de hǎo péngyou le.
What a big voice! Zhang Fei, you're my good friend now.
- Narrator 太阳下山了。他们走到一家小店门口。
Tàiyáng xiàshān le. Tāmen zǒudào yì jiā xiǎo diàn ménkǒu.
The sun was going down. They came to the door of a small inn.
- Zhang Fei 走！我请你喝酒！你没有钱？没关系！
Zǒu! Wǒ qǐng nǐ hē jiǔ! Nǐ méiyǒu qián? Méi guānxi!
Come on! I'll buy you a drink! No money? No problem!
- Guan Yu 老板！快给我酒！我明天要去当兵！
Lǎobǎn! Kuài gěi wǒ jiǔ! Wǒ míngtiān yào qù dāngbīng!
Innkeeper! Bring me some wine, quick! Tomorrow I'm going to join the army!
- Liu Bei 你听。那个人也要去当兵。
Nǐ tīng. Nàge rén yě yào qù dāngbīng.
Listen. That man is joining the army too.
- Zhang Fei 他一个人喝酒，也要当兵？
Tā yí gè rén hē jiǔ, yě yào dāngbīng?
He's drinking all alone, and he wants to be a soldier?
- Liu Bei 我们进去问问他吧。
Wǒmen jìnqù wènwen tā ba.
Let's go in and ask him.
- Zhang Fei 等等！你看他的脸！怎么这么红？他是谁？
Děngdeng! Nǐ kàn tā de liǎn! Zěnme zhème hóng? Tā shì shéi?
Wait! Look at his face! Why is it so red? Who is he?
