Frequently asked questions
Do I type the tone marks?
Usually no. Standard pinyin IMEs accept plain letter codes such as nihao and present Chinese-character candidates. The workbook still shows tone-marked pinyin so you learn the pronunciation.
Why did the keyboard choose the wrong character?
Mandarin has many same-sounding syllables. Type a longer word or phrase, inspect the candidates, and choose the characters that match your intended meaning.
Why would I type v?
On common pinyin keyboards, v stands in for ü because an ordinary keyboard has no dedicated ü key. For example, lv can produce 绿 lǜ, ‘green.’
Do the setup menus look exactly like the worksheet?
Not necessarily. Systems change labels and menu paths. Look for Simplified Chinese plus Pinyin and use the device maker's current help page if the option is not visible.
