我觉得有两个原因。 · Wǒ juéde yǒu liǎng ge yuányīn. · I think there are two reasons.

By the end you can

  • See what the QCE, WACE and SACE Chinese exams ask. One page on the three state courses, and four lines that give your view, an example and a conclusion on any topic.
我的看法是,学外语很有用。 · Wǒ de kànfǎ shì, xué wàiyǔ hěn yǒuyòng. · My view is that learning a language is very useful.
  • Talk about yourself, your family and friends. Three questions with model answers on family, who influences you more and your weekends, then two-sentence answers with a reason using 因为.
对我来说,家人最重要。 · Duì wǒ lái shuō, jiārén zuì zhòngyào. · For me, family matters most.
  • Talk about school, work and your plans. Subjects, part-time jobs and life after high school, using two time frames with 以前…现在… and 现在…以后….
我打算先上大学再工作。 · Wǒ dǎsuàn xiān shàng dàxué zài gōngzuò. · I plan to go to university first and then work.
  • Compare festivals and communities in Australia and China. Chinese New Year in Brisbane, the Mid-Autumn Festival and an Australian Christmas, and family traditions, with comparisons using 比, 没有…那么 and 跟…一样.
我觉得两种文化都很有意思。 · Wǒ juéde liǎng zhǒng wénhuà dōu hěn yǒu yìsi. · I find both cultures really interesting.
  • Give opinions on phones, the environment and stress. Show both sides with 虽然…但是…, give two reasons, and say one thing you do yourself.
我觉得有两个原因。 · Wǒ juéde yǒu liǎng ge yuányīn. · I think there are two reasons.
  • Plan and write four extended responses of about 200 characters. Who influences you most, a year off after school, an email about a local event and an opinion piece on bottled water, each with a four-step plan and a model answer.
总的来说,我觉得好处更多。 · Zǒng de lái shuō, wǒ juéde hǎochu gèng duō. · All in all, I think there are more benefits.
  • Respond to a listening text and a reading text. Answer in English on a voice message about a class trip to a Chinese reading club, and in Chinese on a blog post about volunteering at an aged care home in Perth.

How to use this book

Six weeks to the external exam, as on page 13. Check this year's format and dates with your teacher first, then say answers aloud every day from key words, never from a script.

  1. Week 1: The format and four lines. Check this year's exam format and dates with your teacher, then learn the four lines on page 3 by heart.
  2. Week 2: Topics 1 and 2 aloud. Answer the questions with the timer, 30 to 40 seconds each, and record yourself once.
  3. Week 3: Topics 3 and 4 aloud. Answer the questions, adding one comparison with China to each answer.
  4. Week 4: Extended responses. Write two of the book's extended responses in 30 minutes each, then check them against the four-step plan.
  5. Week 5: Responding and new questions. Do page 12 again with the audio, then write five new questions of your own on each topic and answer them aloud.
  6. Week 6: A full mock. With a friend or your teacher: a timed conversation on all four topics and one timed extended response.

Who it’s for

Year 12 students of Chinese in Queensland (QCE), Western Australia (WACE Chinese: Second Language) and South Australia (SACE Chinese continuers), and teachers who want practice for these exams with audio.

Before you start: The book is at about HSK 3-4 and uses simplified characters. Conversation lines come with pinyin and English, and every model answer is printed in full.

Frequently asked questions

Does one book work for all three states?

It practises the tasks the three courses share: conversation questions, extended responses in Chinese, and responding to texts in English and in Chinese. Formats differ between states and change over time, so check this year's details with your teacher.

Who wrote the questions and model answers?

SayMei wrote every question, text and model answer. The conversation models are spoken by two students, Lin Hao in Brisbane and Chen Xiaoyu in Perth, and every model follows the same pattern: a view, a reason and an example.

Where is the audio?

Free on this book's page on saymei.app, and the code in the book opens it. Every Chinese line is read with a pause to say it back, including the listening text on page 12.

Is this workbook free?

Yes. The whole 18-page PDF is free, and you can look through its pages here before you download. There's no card and nothing to pay.

Do I need a SayMei account?
