A soft bed, new clothes, hot chocolate and a garden full of roses: the empty palace seems so kind. Then Father picks one rose for Beauty, and its owner finds him.

Bàba děng le hěn jiǔ, háishi méiyǒu rén lái.
Father waited a long time, but still no one came.
- Father 对不起，我太饿了……我就吃一点儿，好吗？
Duìbuqǐ, wǒ tài è le… Wǒ jiù chī yìdiǎnr, hǎo ma?
I'm sorry, I'm just so hungry… May I have a little?
- Narrator 吃完饭，他在一张大床上睡了。第二天早上，床边放着一套新衣服。
Chī wán fàn, tā zài yì zhāng dà chuáng shang shuì le. Dì èr tiān zǎoshang, chuáng biān fàngzhe yí tào xīn yīfu.
After supper, he fell asleep in a big bed. In the morning, a new suit of clothes lay beside it.
- Father 新衣服是给我的？桌子上还有一杯热巧克力！
Xīn yīfu shì gěi wǒ de? Zhuōzi shang hái yǒu yì bēi rè qiǎokèlì!
New clothes, for me? And there's a cup of hot chocolate on the table!
- Father 谢谢您，好心的仙女！谢谢您的早饭！
Xièxie nín, hǎoxīn de xiānnǚ! Xièxie nín de zǎofàn!
Thank you, kind fairy! Thank you for my breakfast!
- Father 外面的雪也没有了！花园里开满了花……是玫瑰花！
Wàimiàn de xuě yě méiyǒu le! Huāyuán lǐ kāi mǎn le huā… Shì méiguihuā!
The snow outside is gone! The garden is full of flowers… and they're roses!
- Father 裙子和帽子，我都买不了。可是美儿的玫瑰花，我能带回去！
Qúnzi hé màozi, wǒ dōu mǎi bù liǎo. Kěshì Měi'ér de méiguihuā, wǒ néng dài huíqù!
I can't buy the dresses or the hats. But Beauty's rose, that I can bring home!
- Narrator 爸爸刚摘下一朵玫瑰花，后面就有人大叫起来。
Bàba gāng zhāixià yì duǒ méiguihuā, hòumiàn jiù yǒu rén dà jiào qǐlái.
Father had only just picked a rose when a great roar came from behind him.
- The Beast 站住！谁让你拿我的玫瑰花？！
Zhànzhù! Shéi ràng nǐ ná wǒ de méiguihuā?!
Stop right there! Who said you could take my roses?!
- Narrator 爸爸回头一看，是一个很大很大的野兽，样子可怕极了。
Bàba huítóu yí kàn, shì yí gè hěn dà hěn dà de yěshòu, yàngzi kěpà jí le.
Father turned around. There stood a huge, huge beast, terrible to look at.
- The Beast 我给你饭吃，给你床睡，你呢？你拿了我最爱的玫瑰花！
Wǒ gěi nǐ fàn chī, gěi nǐ chuáng shuì, nǐ ne? Nǐ ná le wǒ zuì ài de méiguihuā!
I gave you food to eat and a bed to sleep in, and what do you do? You take the roses I love most!
- The Beast 拿了我的花，你就得死！
Ná le wǒ de huā, nǐ jiù děi sǐ!
You took my flower, so now you must die!
- Father 大人，对不起！这朵花是给我小女儿的！
Dàrén, duìbuqǐ! Zhè duǒ huā shì gěi wǒ xiǎo nǚ'ér de!
My lord, forgive me! The rose is for my youngest daughter!
- The Beast 别叫我“大人”，我不喜欢好听的话。我是野兽，你就叫我野兽！
Bié jiào wǒ “dàrén”, wǒ bù xǐhuan hǎotīng de huà. Wǒ shì Yěshòu, nǐ jiù jiào wǒ Yěshòu!
Don't call me "my lord." I don't like sweet talk. I'm the Beast, so call me Beast!
- The Beast 你有女儿？……好。要是你的一个女儿愿意替你来，我就让你活。
Nǐ yǒu nǚ'ér?… Hǎo. Yàoshi nǐ de yí gè nǚ'ér yuànyì tì nǐ lái, wǒ jiù ràng nǐ huó.
You have daughters?… Very well. If one of your daughters is willing to come here in your place, I'll let you live.
- The Beast 可是，她要自己愿意来。要是没有人来，三个月以后，你自己回来！
Kěshì, tā yào zìjǐ yuànyì lái. Yàoshi méiyǒu rén lái, sān gè yuè yǐhòu, nǐ zìjǐ huílái!
But she must come of her own free will. If nobody comes, then in three months you come back yourself!
- Father 我怎么能让女儿来这里？不，我只想回家，再看她们一次。
Wǒ zěnme néng ràng nǚ'ér lái zhèlǐ? Bù, wǒ zhǐ xiǎng huí jiā, zài kàn tāmen yí cì.
How could I let one of my girls come here? No. I only want to go home and see them one last time.
- Father 好……我答应你。三个月以后，我回来。
Hǎo… Wǒ dāying nǐ. Sān gè yuè yǐhòu, wǒ huílái.
All right… I promise. In three months, I'll come back.
- The Beast 你不能空手回去。房间里有一个大箱子，你想放什么，就放什么。
Nǐ bù néng kōngshǒu huíqù. Fángjiān lǐ yǒu yí gè dà xiāngzi, nǐ xiǎng fàng shénme, jiù fàng shénme.
You won't go home empty-handed. There's a big chest in your room. Put whatever you like in it.
- Narrator 爸爸在箱子里放了很多金子。第二天，他回到了家。
Bàba zài xiāngzi lǐ fàng le hěn duō jīnzi. Dì èr tiān, tā huí dào le jiā.
Father filled the chest with gold. The next day, he reached home.
- Second Sister 爸爸回来了！我的新裙子呢？我的新鞋子呢？
Bàba huílái le! Wǒ de xīn qúnzi ne? Wǒ de xīn xiézi ne?
Father's back! Where's my new dress? Where are my new shoes?
- Beauty 爸爸，您怎么哭了？
Bàba, nín zěnme kū le?
Father, why are you crying?
- Father 美儿，这是你的玫瑰花。可是这朵花……太贵了。
Měi'ér, zhè shì nǐ de méiguihuā. Kěshì zhè duǒ huā… tài guì le.
Beauty, here's your rose. But this rose… cost far too much.
- Narrator 爸爸把宫殿里的事，都告诉了女儿们。
Bàba bǎ gōngdiàn lǐ de shì, dōu gàosu le nǚ'érmen.
Father told his daughters everything that had happened at the palace.
- Eldest Sister 都是美儿不好！我们要裙子，她要什么玫瑰花！
Dōu shì Měi'ér bù hǎo! Wǒmen yào qúnzi, tā yào shénme méiguihuā!
It's all Beauty's fault! We asked for dresses, and she had to ask for a rose!
- Second Sister 你看她！爸爸要死了，她一点儿也不哭！
Nǐ kàn tā! Bàba yào sǐ le, tā yìdiǎnr yě bù kū!
Look at her! Father's going to die, and she isn't even crying!
- Beauty 我为什么要哭？爸爸不会死的。
Wǒ wèishénme yào kū? Bàba bú huì sǐ de.
Why should I cry? Father isn't going to die.
- Beauty 野兽要一个女儿，对吗？那我去。
Yěshòu yào yí gè nǚ'ér, duì ma? Nà wǒ qù.
The Beast wants one daughter, doesn't he? Then I'll go.
- Father 不行！美儿，你还这么小……
Bù xíng! Měi'ér, nǐ hái zhème xiǎo…
No! Beauty, you're still so young…
- Beauty 玫瑰花是我要的。爸爸，明天我跟您一起去见野兽！
Méiguihuā shì wǒ yào de. Bàba, míngtiān wǒ gēn nín yìqǐ qù jiàn Yěshòu!
The rose was my wish. Father, tomorrow I'm going with you to see the Beast!
