- Narrator
Dì èr tiān zǎoshang, yǔ tíng le, tàiyáng chūlai le.
The next morning, the rain had stopped and the sun was out.
Xiǎo Jiǎn? Nǐ hái zài! Wǒ zuótiān wǎnshang yìzhí bù gǎn shuìzháo.
Janet? You're still here! Last night I didn't dare fall asleep.
- Jane Eyre
Wǒ zài zhèr, xiānsheng. Wàibian yǒu tàiyáng, wǒmen chūqu zǒuzou ba.
I'm here, sir. The sun is out. Let's go for a little walk.

- Narrator
Jane took his hand and led him out onto the grass.
Hǎo le, gàosu wǒ ba. Zhè yì nián, nǐ zài nǎr?
All right, tell me. This past year, where were you?
- Jane Eyre
Wǒ zài huāngyuán shang zǒu le liǎng tiān, yèli jiù shuì zài wàibian. Wǒ chà yìdiǎnr sǐ zài nàlǐ.
I walked on the moor for two days and slept outside at night. I nearly died there.
Sǐ zài huāngyuán shang? Xiǎo Jiǎn… dōu shì wǒ bù hǎo.
Dying on the moor? Janet... It's all my fault.
- Jane Eyre
Then the people at Moor House opened their door to me. I stayed there and taught at a school.
- Mr. Rochester
Nà jiā rén duì nǐ hǎo ma?
Were they good to you?
- Jane Eyre
Hěn hǎo. Hòulái wǒ cái zhīdào, tāmen shì wǒ de biǎogē hé biǎojiě!
Very good to me. Later I found out they were my cousins!
Biǎogē? Tā jiào shénme? Shì shénme yàng de rén?
A cousin? What's his name? What sort of man is he?
- Jane Eyre
Tā jiào Shèng Yuēhàn, shì ge mùshī. Tā hěn gāo, hěn hǎokàn, shénme dōu huì.
His name is St. John. He's a clergyman. He's tall, handsome, and good at everything.
- Mr. Rochester
Tā bǐ wǒ hǎokàn ma?
Is he better-looking than me?
- Jane Eyre
Hǎokàn duō le, xiānsheng.
Much better-looking, sir.
- Mr. Rochester
Tā duì nǐ shuō le shénme?
What did he say to you?
- Jane Eyre
Tā yào wǒ jià gěi tā, gēn tā qù Yìndù.
He wanted me to marry him and go to India with him.
- Mr. Rochester
Nà nǐ jiù qù jià gěi tā ba!
Then go and marry him!
- Jane Eyre
Wǒ bú huì jià gěi tā, xiānsheng. Tā bú ài wǒ, wǒ yě bú ài tā.
I won't marry him, sir. He doesn't love me, and I don't love him.
Kěshì wǒ xiā le, Xiǎo Jiǎn. Wǒ jiù xiàng nà kē lǎo lìzi shù, shǎndiàn dǎ xiàlai, tā jiù duàn le.
But I'm blind, Janet. I'm like that old chestnut tree. The lightning struck, and it broke.
- Jane Eyre
You're not that broken tree, sir. You're still a green tree, big and tall!
- Mr. Rochester
Jiǎn, nǐ yuànyì zuò wǒ de qīzi ma?
Jane, will you be my wife?
- Jane Eyre
Yuànyì, xiānsheng.
Yes, sir.
Nǐ bú jiàn le, Sāngfēi'ěrdé yě shāo le. Wǒ chángcháng yí gè rén gēn Shàngdì shuōhuà.
You were gone, and Thornfield burned too. I often talked to God, all alone.
This past Monday night, near midnight, I called you: “Jane! Jane! Jane!”
- Jane Eyre
Jiù shì nà tiān wǎnshang…
That very night...
Ránhòu, wǒ tīngjiàn fēng li yǒu nǐ de shēngyīn: “Wǒ lái le, děngzhe wǒ! Nǐ zài nǎr?”
And then I heard your voice on the wind: “I'm coming! Wait for me! Where are you?”
- Jane Eyre
Dúzhě, nà shì xīngqīyī wǎnshang, kuài dào bànyè, wǒ yě tīngjiàn tā le. Zhè jiàn shì wǒ fàng zài xīn li, méiyǒu gàosu tā.
Reader, it was Monday night, near midnight, and I heard him too. I kept it in my heart and never told him.
