Rochester's Story

Mr. Rochester tells Jane the whole story at last and asks her for one thing. That night, a dream of her childhood is waiting for her.

That afternoon, in a room downstairs, Mr. Rochester began to tell his story.
- Mr. Rochester 简，律师说的都是真的。你听我说。
Jiǎn, lǜshī shuō de dōu shì zhēn de. Nǐ tīng wǒ shuō.
Jane, everything the lawyer said is true. Listen to me.

Wǒ bàba de qián, dōu yào liú gěi wǒ gēge.
All my father's money was to go to my elder brother.

So he sent me to Jamaica to marry Bertha Mason. Her family was very rich.
- Jane Eyre 先生，就为了钱？
Xiānsheng, jiù wèile qián?
Sir, just for money?
- Mr. Rochester 对，三万英镑。那时候我年轻，她很漂亮。
Duì, sān wàn yīngbàng. Nà shíhou wǒ niánqīng, tā hěn piàoliang.
Yes. Thirty thousand pounds. I was young then, and she was beautiful.
- Mr. Rochester 结婚以后，我才知道：她妈妈疯了，她家里很多人都疯了。
Jiéhūn yǐhòu, wǒ cái zhīdào: tā māma fēng le, tā jiā li hěn duō rén dōu fēng le.
Only after the wedding did I learn that her mother was mad, and many in her family were mad.

And so she went mad too.
- Mr. Rochester 四年，天天都像地狱。四年以后，我带她回了英国。

Four years, and every day was like hell. After four years I brought her back to England.
- Mr. Rochester 我让格蕾丝在三楼照顾她，谁也不知道。

I had Grace look after her on the third floor, and nobody knew.

That laugh, the fire that night, and my veil... it was all her.

For ten years I wandered all over Europe. In Paris there was Celine, and after her, two other women.
- Mr. Rochester 她们都不是我要找的人。那年一月，在冰上，我见到了你。
Tāmen dōu bú shì wǒ yào zhǎo de rén. Nà nián yīyuè, zài bīng shang, wǒ jiàndào le nǐ.
None of them was the one I was looking for. Then one January, on the ice, I met you.
- Jane Eyre 是您的马先看见了我，先生。
Shì nín de mǎ xiān kànjiàn le wǒ, xiānsheng.
It was your horse that saw me first, sir.
- Mr. Rochester 对，我的马！简，跟我走吧。我们去法国南方，住在一座白色的房子里。
Duì, wǒ de mǎ! Jiǎn, gēn wǒ zǒu ba. Wǒmen qù Fǎguó nánfāng, zhù zài yí zuò báisè de fángzi li.
Yes, my horse! Jane, come away with me. We'll go to the south of France and live in a white house.
- Mr. Rochester 你就是我的妻子。没有人会知道。
Nǐ jiù shì wǒ de qīzi. Méiyǒu rén huì zhīdào.
You'll be my wife. No one will ever know.
- Jane Eyre 上帝会知道，先生。我也会知道。
Shàngdì huì zhīdào, xiānsheng. Wǒ yě huì zhīdào.
God will know, sir. And so will I.
- Mr. Rochester 简，你不爱我吗？
Jiǎn, nǐ bú ài wǒ ma?
Jane, don't you love me?
- Jane Eyre 我爱您。可是我要听上帝的话。我不能跟您走。
Wǒ ài nín. Kěshì wǒ yào tīng Shàngdì de huà. Wǒ bù néng gēn nín zǒu.
I love you. But I must obey God's word. I can't go with you.
- Narrator 那天夜里，简做了一个梦。
Nà tiān yèli, Jiǎn zuò le yí gè mèng.
That night, Jane had a dream.
- Jane Eyre 我又回到了红房间……墙上有光。光里，走出来一个穿白衣服的人。
Wǒ yòu huí dào le hóng fángjiān… qiáng shang yǒu guāng. Guāng li, zǒu chūlai yí gè chuān bái yīfu de rén.
I'm back in the red room... There's a light on the wall. Out of the light comes a figure in white.
- Jane's Mother 孩子，快离开这儿。
Háizi, kuài líkāi zhèr.
My daughter, flee from here.
- Jane Eyre 妈妈，我会的。
Māma, wǒ huì de.
Mother, I will.
- Narrator 天快亮的时候，简拿着一个小包，带着一点儿钱，走出了房间。
Tiān kuài liàng de shíhou, Jiǎn názhe yí gè xiǎo bāo, dàizhe yìdiǎnr qián, zǒu chū le fángjiān.
Just before dawn, Jane took a small parcel and a little money and left her room.
- Jane Eyre 再见了，我亲爱的主人。
Zàijiàn le, wǒ qīn'ài de zhǔrén.
Goodbye, my dear master.
- Narrator 她坐上了第一辆马车。马车走了很久很久。

She got onto the first coach. The coach traveled for a long, long time.
- Jane Eyre 两天了……这是哪儿？前边，后边，都是荒原。
Liǎng tiān le… zhè shì nǎr? Qiánbian, hòubian, dōu shì huāngyuán.
Two days... Where is this? Ahead of me, behind me, nothing but moor.
- Jane Eyre 等等！我的包……还在车上！
Děngdeng! Wǒ de bāo… hái zài chē shang!
Wait! My parcel... it's still on the coach!
