Read what you hear
Hái shì nà yì tiān, hái shì zài shān li. Jiǎn hěn jiǔ méiyǒu shuōhuà.
Still the same day, still in the hills. For a long time Jane said nothing.
- St. John
Jiǎn, nǐ hái méiyǒu huídá wǒ.
Jane, you haven't answered me yet.
- Jane Eyre
Wǒ kěyǐ gēn nǐ qù Yìndù, zuò nǐ de mèimei, bú zuò nǐ de qīzi.
I can go to India with you, as your sister. Not as your wife.

- St. John
Mèimei? Chuánjiàoshì yào de shì qīzi, bú shì mèimei.
A sister? A missionary needs a wife, not a sister.
- Jane Eyre
Nǐ bú ài wǒ, Shèng Yuēhàn. Nǐ zìjǐ yě zhīdào.
You don't love me, St. John. You know it yourself.
- St. John
Ài? Jiéhūn yǐhòu, ài huì yǒu de.
Love? Once we are married, love will come.
- Jane Eyre
Méiyǒu ài, wǒ bú jià.
Without love, I won't marry.
- St. John
Yíbàn wǒ bú yào. Nǐ gēn wǒ qù, jiù yào zuò wǒ de qīzi.
I won't take half. If you come with me, you come as my wife.
- St. John
Wǒ míngtiān qù Jiànqiáo. Děng wǒ huílai, nǐ zài huídá wǒ.
Tomorrow I go to Cambridge. When I come back, give me your answer.
Kěshì dì èr tiān, tā méiyǒu zǒu. Tā zài jiā li yòu zhù le yí gè xīngqī.
But the next day he did not go. He stayed at home another week.
- St. John
Wǎn'ān, Jiǎn. Míngtiān zǎoshang hái xué Yìndù huà.
Good night, Jane. Tomorrow morning, the language of India again.
- Jane Eyre
Tā bù shēngqì, kěshì xiàng bīng yíyàng lěng. Zhè bǐ shēngqì gèng ràng wǒ nánguò.
He isn't angry, but he's as cold as ice. That hurts me more than anger.
- Jane Eyre
Shèng Yuēhàn, děng yíxià! Nǐ hái zài shēng wǒ de qì ma?
St. John, wait! Are you still angry with me?
- St. John
Wǒ méiyǒu shēngqì. Wǒmen shì péngyou.
I'm not angry. We are friends.
- Jane Eyre
Nǐ gēn wǒ shuōhuà, xiàng gēn yì zhāng zhuōzi shuōhuà.
You talk to me the way you'd talk to a table.
- St. John
Péngyou bú gòu, Jiǎn. Wǒ yào nǐ zuò wǒ de qīzi.
Friendship is not enough, Jane. I want you as my wife.
- Jane Eyre
Rúguǒ wǒ jià gěi nǐ, nǐ huì ràng wǒ sǐ de! Xiànzài jiù yǐjīng shì zhèyàng le!
If I married you, you would kill me! It's happening already!
Nǐ shuō de huà, bú shì yí gè nǚrén yīnggāi shuō de, yě bú shì zhēnhuà.
Those are not words a woman should say, and they are not true.
- Narrator
Tā zǒu le. Jiǎn yí gè rén zhàn zài huāyuán li, kū le hěn jiǔ.
He walked away. Jane stood alone in the garden and cried for a long time.
- Diana
Jiǎn! Nǐ zěnme zài zhèr kū? Shì Shèng Yuēhàn ma?
Jane! Why are you crying out here? Is it St. John?
- Jane Eyre
Dài'ānnà, tā yào wǒ jià gěi tā, gēn tā qù Yìndù.
Diana, he wants me to marry him and go to India with him.
- Diana
Qù Yìndù? Jiǎn, nàr nàme rè, nǐ huó bu liǎo sān gè yuè!
To India? Jane, it's so hot there, you wouldn't live three months!
- Jane Eyre
Tā shuō, wǒ shēng xiàlai jiù shì wèile gōngzuò, bú shì wèile ài.
He says I was born for work, not for love.
Tā shì wǒ gēge, kěshì tā de xīn shì bīng zuò de! Tā yí gè yuè cái xiào yí cì!
He's my brother, but his heart is made of ice! He only smiles once a month!
- Jane Eyre
Zhège xīngqī, yí cì yě méiyǒu.
This week, not once.
- Diana
Nǐ bù néng jià gěi tā. Wǒ bú ràng nǐ qù!
You can't marry him. I won't let you go!
- Narrator
Then came St. John's last evening at home.
Jiǎn, míngtiān wǒ jiù zǒu. Jīntiān wǎnshang, wǒ wèi nǐ qiú Shàngdì. Nǐ zài hǎohǎo xiǎng yi xiǎng.
Jane, tomorrow I leave. Tonight I will pray to God for you. Think it over once more.
