The Teacher

Old Faria turns a prison into a school and teaches Edmond to think. Then he shows Edmond a burned page that points to a fortune, and his hands begin to shake.

    Cóng nàtiān qǐ, Àidéméng měitiān cóng dìdào pájìn Fǎlǐyà de láofáng. Shénfù xiàng yí wèi lǎoshī, jiàotā hěnduō dōngxi.

    From that day on, Edmond crawled through the tunnel into Faria's cell every day. The priest became his teacher and taught him many things.

  2. Abbé Faria 今天先学意大利话。跟我念：我想要自由。

    Jīntiān xiānxué yìdàlì huà. Gēn wǒniàn: wǒ xiǎngyào zìyóu.

    Today we start with Italian. Repeat after me: I want to be free.

  3. Edmond Dantès 这太难了！我的舌头不听话。

    Zhètàinán le! Wǒ de shétou bù tīnghuà.

    This is so hard! My tongue won't obey me.

    Mànmànlái. Yì nián yǐhòu, nǐ huì shuō sìzhǒng huà.

    Take your time. A year from now, you'll speak four languages.

  2. Edmond Dantès 一年？四种？神父，您想把我变成一本书吗？

    Yì nián? Sìzhǒng? Shénfù, nín xiǎng bǎ wǒ biànchéng yì běnshū ma?

    One year? Four? Father, do you want to turn me into a book?

  3. Abbé Faria 不是变成书，是变成一个聪明人。聪明人就算在监狱里，也不会输。

    Bú shì biànchéng shū, shì biànchéng yí gè cōngmingrén. Cōngmingrén jiùsuàn zài jiānyù lǐ, yě bú huì shū.

    Not a book, a clever man. A clever man doesn't lose, even in a prison.

  4. Narrator 一年，两年……爱德蒙学历史，学数学，也学了好几个国家的话。没有纸，法里亚就用烧黑的木头，在墙上写字。

    Yì nián, liǎngnián… Àidéméng xué lìshǐ, xué shùxué, yě xué le hǎojǐgè guójiā dehuà. Méiyǒu zhǐ, Fǎlǐyà jiù yòng shāo hēi de mùtou, zài qiángshàng xiězì.

    One year, two years... Edmond learned history, mathematics and the languages of several countries. With no paper, Faria wrote on the wall with burnt wood.

  5. Edmond Dantès 神父，我现在能读懂您写的东西了。这面墙，也成了一本书。

    Shénfù, wǒ xiànzài néng dúdǒng nín xiě de dōngxi le. Zhè miànqiáng, yě chéng le yì běnshū.

    Father, I can read what you write now. This wall has become a book too.

  6. Abbé Faria 你看，你已经不是那个只会哭的水手了。你的脑子开始工作了。

    Nǐ kàn, nǐ yǐjīng bú shì nàge zhǐhuì kū de shuǐshǒu le. Nǐ de nǎozi kāishǐ gōngzuò le.

    See, you are no longer the sailor who only cried. Your mind has started to work.

  7. Edmond Dantès 那我来试试您教我的办法。一件事一定有原因，我想知道，是谁害了我。

    Nà wǒ lái shìshì nín jiào wǒ de bànfǎ. Yí jiàn shì yídìng yǒu yuányīn, wǒ xiǎng zhīdào, shì shuí hài le wǒ.

    Then let me try your method. Everything has a cause, and I want to know who ruined me.

  8. Abbé Faria 好。谁会因为你的好运，心里不高兴？

    Hǎo. Shuí huì yīnwèi nǐ de hǎoyùn, xīnlǐ bù gāoxìng?

    Good. Who would be unhappy about your good luck?

  9. Edmond Dantès 邓格拉尔！他一直不喜欢我，因为我要当船长。

    Dènggélā'ěr! Tā yìzhí bù xǐhuan wǒ, yīnwèi wǒyào dāng chuánzhǎng.

    Danglars! He never liked me, because I was going to be captain.

  10. Abbé Faria 还有谁爱着梅赛苔丝，想让你走开？

    Háiyǒu shuí ài zhe Méisàitāisī, xiǎng ràng nǐ zǒukāi?

    And who loved Mercedes and wanted you out of the way?

  11. Edmond Dantès 费尔南……她的表哥。那天晚上，他也在酒馆里。

    Fèi'ěrnán… Tā de biǎogē. Nàtiān wǎnshang, tā yě zài jiǔguǎn lǐ.

    Fernand... her cousin. He was in the tavern that night too.

  12. Abbé Faria 最后一个：谁最怕那封信被别人看见？

    Zuìhòu yí gè: shuí zuìpà nà fēngxìn bèi biérén kànjiàn?

    One more: who was most afraid of that letter being seen?

  13. Edmond Dantès 维尔福！他看了收信人的名字，脸一下子就白了。

    Wéi'ěrfú! Tā kàn le shōuxìnrén de míngzi, liǎn yí xiàzi jiù bái le.

    Villefort! When he read the name of the person it was for, his face turned white.

  14. Edmond Dantès 是他们三个！邓格拉尔写了信，费尔南送了信，维尔福让我进了牢房！

    Shì tāmen sāngè! Dènggélā'ěr xiě le xìn, Fèi'ěrnán sòng le xìn, Wéi'ěrfú ràng wǒ jìn le láofáng!

    It was the three of them! Danglars wrote the letter, Fernand delivered it, and Villefort put me in prison!

  15. Abbé Faria 爱德蒙，冷静。我知道你很生气，可是只想着报仇的人，心会慢慢变成石头。

    Àidéméng, lěngjìng. Wǒ zhīdào nǐ hěn shēngqì, kěshì zhǐ xiǎngzhe bàochóu de rén, xīnhuì mànmàn biànchéng shítou.

    Edmond, calm down. I know you are angry, but a man who thinks only of revenge slowly turns his heart to stone.

  16. Edmond Dantès 那我该怎么办？就这样算了吗？

    Nà wǒ gāi zěnmebàn? Jiù zhèyàng suànle ma?

    Then what should I do? Just let it go?

  17. Abbé Faria 不。先要自由，先要活下去。有一件事，我还没有告诉你。你看这张纸。

    Bù. Xiān yào zìyóu, xiān yào huóxiàqù. Yǒu yí jiàn shì, wǒ hái méiyǒu gàosu nǐ. Nǐ kàn zhè zhāngzhǐ.

    No. First we must be free, and first we must stay alive. There's one thing I haven't told you. Look at this paper.

  18. Edmond Dantès 这张纸烧掉了一半。上面写着什么？

    Zhè zhāngzhǐ shāodiào le yíbàn. Shàngmiàn xiě zhe shénme?

    This paper is half burned. What is written on it?

  19. Abbé Faria 意大利有一个很有钱的家族，叫斯帕达。他们把金子和珠宝，藏在一个小岛的山洞里。那个岛叫基督山。

    Yìdàlì yǒu yí gè hěn yǒuqián de jiāzú, jiào Sīpàdá. Tāmen bǎ jīnzi hé zhūbǎo, cáng zài yí gè xiǎodǎo de shāndòng lǐ. Nàge dǎo jiào Jīdūshān.

    In Italy there was a very rich family called Spada. They hid their gold and jewels in a cave on a small island. That island is called Monte Cristo.

  20. Edmond Dantès 基督山……世界上真的有这样的宝藏吗？

    Jīdūshān… Shìjiè shàng zhēnde yǒu zhèyàng de bǎozàng ma?

    Monte Cristo... can there really be a treasure like that?

  21. Abbé Faria 有。我一个人找了很多年，这张纸上，写着宝藏藏在哪儿。

    Yǒu. Wǒ yí gè rén zhǎo le hěnduōnián, zhè zhāngzhǐ shàng, xiě zhe bǎozàng cáng zài nǎ'ér.

    There is. I searched alone for many years, and this paper says where it is hidden.

  22. Edmond Dantès 那您为什么不自己去拿？

    Nà nín wèishénme bú zìjǐ qù ná?

    Then why don't you go and get it yourself?

  23. Abbé Faria 因为我的时间不多了。我的病每隔几个月来一次，这一次，会比以前重。

    Yīnwèi wǒ de shíjiān bù duō le. Wǒ de bìng měigé jǐgè yuè lái yí cì, zhè yí cì, huì bǐ yǐqián zhòng.

    Because I don't have much time. My illness comes every few months, and this time it will be worse than before.

  24. Edmond Dantès 别这么说！我们会一起出去，一起去基督山！

    Bié zhème shuō! Wǒmen huì yìqǐ chūqù, yìqǐ qù Jīdūshān!

    Don't say that! We'll get out together, and go to Monte Cristo together!

  25. Abbé Faria 爱德蒙，答应我：要是只有你一个人出去，你一定要去那个岛，把宝藏拿到手。

    Àidéméng, dāying wǒ: yàoshi zhǐyǒu nǐ yí gè rén chūqù, nǐ yídìng yào qù nàge dǎo, bǎ bǎozàng nádào shǒu.

    Edmond, promise me: if you get out alone, you must go to that island and take the treasure.

  26. Edmond Dantès 我答应您。可是您不会有事的，您还要教我很多……

    Wǒ dāying nín. Kěshì nín bú huì yǒushì de, nín háiyào jiào wǒ hěnduō…

    I promise. But you'll be fine, you still have so much to teach me...

  27. Abbé Faria 啊……又来了……我的手……我动不了了……快扶我回牢房！

    A… Yòu lái le… Wǒ de shǒu… Wǒdòng bù le le… Kuài fú wǒ huí láofáng!

    Ah... it's coming again... my hands... I can't move... help me back to my cell, quick!

    Shénfù! Shénfù! Chēngzhù! Wǒ zài zhè'ér!

    Father! Father! Hold on! I'm here!
