Stapleton laughs off the terrible sound and dashes after a butterfly. Then a beautiful stranger hurries up to Watson with an urgent, whispered warning.

Read what you hear
Nàge kěpà de shēngyīn tíng le. Zhǎozé biān shang, liǎng gè rén dōu méiyǒu shuōhuà.
The terrible sound died away. At the edge of the mire, neither man said a word.
Sītáipǔdùn xiānsheng, nǐ xiāngxìn nàge lièquǎn de gùshi ma?
Mr. Stapleton, do you believe that story about the hound?
Hāhā, wǒ shì xiāngxìn kēxué de rén! Yěxǔ shì zhǎozé xiàmiàn de shuǐ zài dòng, yěxǔ shì yì zhǒng hěn shǎojiàn de niǎo.
Ha ha, I'm a man of science! Maybe it's the water moving under the mire. Or maybe it's a very rare bird.
Chapter 13 is part of SayMei Stories ($2.99 a month) and SayMei Premium. Part 1 of The Hound of the Baskervilles (chapters 1–5) is free, and The Second Cup of Tea, The Great Race: The Twelve Animals, The Kitchen God, Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Chang'e and the Moon, Alice in Wonderland and Judge Dee's Cases are free from start to finish.
- Dr. Watson
Wǒ tīngzhe, nà kě bú xiàng niǎo jiào.
To my ears, that didn't sound like any bird.
Nǐ kàn shān shang nàxiē shítou fángzi, jǐ qiān nián qián jiù yǒu rén zhù le.
Look at those stone huts up on the hill. People lived in them thousands of years ago.
Kuài kàn, yì zhī húdié, hěn shǎojiàn de nà zhǒng! Huáshēng yīshēng, děng wǒ yíxià!
Look, a butterfly, a very rare kind! Dr. Watson, wait for me!
Sītáipǔdùn názhe wǎng, zài zhǎozé biān shang tiào lái tiào qù, yuè pǎo yuè yuǎn.
Net in hand, Stapleton leapt here and there along the mire, farther and farther away.
Pǎo de xiàng gè háizi… wèile yì zhī húdié, tā yìdiǎn yě bú pà zhǎozé.
He runs like a schoolboy... for one butterfly, he isn't the least bit afraid of the mire.
Yí wèi xiǎojie pǎo guòlái le. Yòu gāo yòu měi, tóufa hé yǎnjing dōu shì hēi de.
A young lady is hurrying toward me. Tall and beautiful, with dark hair and dark eyes.
- Beryl
Kuài huíqù, mǎshàng huí Lúndūn qù!
Go back! Go straight back to London!
- Dr. Watson
Shénme? Wǒ wèishénme yào huí Lúndūn?
What? Why should I go back to London?
Wǒ bù néng shuō, kěshì nǐ yídìng yào zǒu. Wǎnshang qiānwàn bú yào qù huāngyuán!
I can't tell you, but you must leave. Never, ever go on the moor at night!
- Beryl
Wǒ gēge huílái le! Wǒ shuō de huà, yí gè zì yě bié gàosu tā!
My brother's coming back! Don't tell him a single word of what I said!
- Stapleton
Bèilì'ěr, nǐ zěnme zài zhèr?
Beryl, what are you doing here?
Wǒ zài gēn Hēnglì Juéshì shuōhuà. Wǒ shuō, xiànzài lái kàn huā, yǒudiǎn wǎn le.
I was talking with Sir Henry. I told him it's a little late in the year to see the flowers.
Hēnglì Juéshì? Bù, bù, zhè wèi shì Huáshēng yīshēng, Hēnglì Juéshì de péngyou.
Sir Henry? No, no. This is Dr. Watson, Sir Henry's friend.
- Beryl
Duìbuqǐ, Huáshēng yīshēng, wǒ kàn cuò rén le.
I'm sorry, Dr. Watson. I took you for someone else.
Tā de mèimei? Gēge gèzi xiǎo, tóufa shì huáng de, mèimei gèzi gāo, tóufa shì hēi de, yìdiǎn yě bú xiàng!
His sister? He's small with fair hair, she's tall with dark hair. They look nothing alike!
Wǒmen lái zhèr liǎng nián le. Yǐqián, wǒ zài běifāng kāiguo yí gè xuéxiào.
We've been here two years. Before that, I ran a school in the north.
- Dr. Watson
And what happened? Why did the school close?
Hěn duō háizi shēngbìng le, xuéxiào jiù guānmén le. Bù shuō zhège le! Xiànzài wǒ yǒu huāngyuán, yǒu húdié, duō hǎo!
A lot of the boys fell ill, and the school had to close. But enough of that! Now I have the moor and my butterflies, and life is good!
Huáshēng yí gè rén wǎng zhuāngyuán zǒu. Qiánmiàn yǐjīng néng kànjiàn nà liǎng zuò tǎ le.
Watson walked back toward the Hall alone. Ahead, he could already see its two towers.
Sītáipǔdùn xiǎojie, nǐ zài zhèr děng wǒ? Nǐ yídìng shì pǎo guòlái de ba?
Miss Stapleton, you've been waiting for me here? You must have run all the way.
- Beryl
Gāngcái wǒ yǐwéi nǐ shì Hēnglì Juéshì. Qǐng wàng le wǒ shuō de huà ba.
Back there, I thought you were Sir Henry. Please forget what I said.
Wǒ wàng bu liǎo. Nǐ dàodǐ zài pà shénme, wèishénme yào Hēnglì Juéshì zǒu?
I can't forget it. What are you so afraid of? Why do you want Sir Henry to leave?
Zhè shì wǒ de mìmì, wǒ bù néng shuō. Wǒ gēge shuō, zhuāngyuán li yǒu rén zhù, duì dàjiā dōu hǎo. Tā yàoshi zhīdào le, huì hěn shēngqì.
That's my secret, and I can't tell you. My brother says it's good for everyone to have the Hall lived in. If he found out, he'd be very angry.
Wǒ bú huì gàosu tā. Kěshì nǐ děi gàosu wǒ, Hēnglì Juéshì yǒu wēixiǎn ma?
I won't tell him. But you must tell me: is Sir Henry in danger?
Dài Hēnglì Juéshì zǒu ba. Zhège dìfang, yǐjīng hàisǐ tāmen jiā tài duō rén le.
Take Sir Henry away. This place has already killed too many of his family.
