Bèikè Jiē de fángjiān li, Fú'ěrmósī hé Huáshēng dōu bù shuōhuà. Mòdìmò de shēngyīn biàn de hěn dī.

In the room on Baker Street, Holmes and Watson sat silent. Mortimer's voice had dropped very low.

  2. Sherlock Holmes

Yí gè mìmì? Nǐ shéi yě méi gàosu? Wèishénme?

A secret? You told no one? Why not?

Yīnwèi wǒ shì yīshēng, wǒ xiāngxìn kēxué. Rúguǒ wǒ shuōchū zhège mìmì, dàjiā huì shuō, Mòdìmò yīshēng yě xiāngxìn nàge tónghuà.

Because I'm a doctor, a man of science. If I told this secret, people would say Dr. Mortimer believes the fairy tale too.

Chá'ěrsī Juéshì hé wǒ shì hǎo péngyou. Wǒmen nàr, dúguo hěn duō shū de rén bù duō.

Sir Charles and I were good friends. Where we live, there aren't many educated men.

Zhǐyǒu Fúlánkèlán xiānsheng, hái yǒu Sītáipǔdùn xiānsheng, tā hěn dǒng zìrán kēxué.

Only Mr. Frankland, and Mr. Stapleton, who knows a great deal about nature.

Chá'ěrsī Juéshì xiāngxìn nàge zǔzhòu. Tā wǎnshang cónglái bú qù huāngyuán.

Sir Charles believed in the curse. He never went out on the moor at night.

Wǎnshang bú qù huāngyuán… jiù xiàng nà zhāng jiù zhǐ shang xiě de.

Never on the moor at night... just as the old paper says.

Tā chángcháng wèn wǒ: “Mòdìmò, nǐ wǎnshang zài huāngyuán shang, tīngjiànguo lièquǎn de jiàoshēng ma?”

He often asked me, “Mortimer, have you ever heard a hound howling on the moor at night?”

Yǒu yì tiān wǎnshang, wǒ zuò chē dào le tā jiā ménkǒu. Tā kànzhe wǒ hòumiàn, yǎnjing li quán shì hàipà.

One evening, I drove up to his door. He was staring past me, over my shoulder, his eyes full of terror.

Wǒ mǎshàng huíguò tóu, kànjiàn yí gè hēihēi de dōngxi pǎo le guòqù, yǒu xiǎoniú nàme dà.

I turned around at once and saw something black run past. It was as big as a calf.

  11. Dr. Watson

    Shì yì zhī gǒu ma?

    Was it a dog?

I don't know. I ran over to look, but it was gone. Sir Charles had gone white with fear.

Tā de xīnzàng běnlái jiù bù hǎo. Suǒyǐ wǒ ràng tā qù Lúndūn zhù yí duàn shíjiān.

His heart was already weak. So I told him to go and stay in London for a while.

  14. Sherlock Holmes

He was to leave for London the next day... Well, tell me your secret. When you reached the yew alley, what did you see?

First I looked by the little gate. There was cigar ash on the ground, dropped twice. He had stood there for quite a while.

  16. Sherlock Holmes

Xuějiā de yānhuī! Hěn hǎo de xiànsuǒ! Huáshēng, nǐ tīngjiàn le ma? Zhè wèi yīshēng huì kàn yānhuī!

Cigar ash! An excellent clue! Watson, did you hear that? This doctor knows how to read cigar ash!

Mòdìmò yīshēng, tā hěn shǎo shuō biérén hǎo. Nǐ kuài chéng zhēntàn le!

Dr. Mortimer, he hardly ever praises anyone. You're nearly a detective!

Past the gate he was on his toes. I saw that myself. And there was no wound on him.

But his face... I've been a doctor for many years, and I've never seen a face so full of fear.

Jiù xiàng nàge nǚhái yíyàng… tā yě shì bèi xiàsǐ de?

Just like the girl... was he frightened to death too?

I'm a doctor. All I can say is that his heart stopped. But what made it stop?

  22. Sherlock Holmes

Bālǐmó'ěr shuō, tā shēnbiān de dìshang shénme yě méiyǒu. Shì zhèyàng ma?

Barrymore said there was nothing on the ground near the body. Is that true?

Barrymore didn't notice. But I did, a little way from the body.

Yǒu yìxiē jiǎoyìn, hěn xīn, yě hěn qīngchu.

There were footprints. Fresh, and very clear.

  25. Sherlock Holmes

    Jiǎoyìn?

    Footprints?

  26. Dr. Mortimer

    Jiǎoyìn.

    Footprints.

  27. Sherlock Holmes

    Nánrén de, háishi nǚrén de?

    A man's or a woman's?

Fú'ěrmósī xiānsheng, nà shì… yì zhī tèbié dà de lièquǎn de jiǎoyìn!

Mr. Holmes, they were... the footprints of a gigantic hound!
