In the farmyard, everyone has something to say about the big gray duckling, from grand old Granny Duck to a turkey who thinks he's king.

Dì èr tiān, Yā māma dàizhe háizimen, zǒujìn le dà yuànzi.
The next day, Mother Duck led her children into the big farmyard.
- Mother Duck 孩子们，头要高高的！跟着妈妈走！
Háizimen, tóu yào gāogāo de! Gēnzhe māma zǒu!
Heads up high, children! Follow Mama!
- Granny Duck 鸭妈妈，这些都是你的孩子吗？
Yā māma, zhèxiē dōu shì nǐ de háizi ma?
Mother Duck, are these all your children?
- Mother Duck 对，鸭奶奶！一、二、三、四、五！
Duì, Yā nǎinai! Yī, èr, sān, sì, wǔ!
They are, Granny Duck! One, two, three, four, five!
- Granny Duck 四个都很好看。那个大的，能不能回到蛋里，再出来一次？
Sì gè dōu hěn hǎokàn. Nàge dà de, néng bu néng huídào dàn lǐ, zài chūlái yí cì?
Four of them are lovely. That big one… couldn't he go back in his egg and hatch all over again?
- The Ugly Duckling 回到蛋里？不！蛋里好黑！
Huídào dàn lǐ? Bù! Dàn lǐ hǎo hēi!
Back in the egg? No! It's so dark in there!
- Mother Duck 鸭奶奶，他是不太好看，可是他很好。他游泳，游得最好！
Yā nǎinai, tā shì bú tài hǎokàn, kěshì tā hěn hǎo. Tā yóuyǒng, yóu de zuì hǎo!
Granny Duck, he's not much to look at, but he's a good boy. And he swims best of all!
- Granny Duck 游得好，有什么用？看我腿上的红布！大家都听我的！
Yóu de hǎo, yǒu shénme yòng? Kàn wǒ tuǐ shang de hóng bù! Dàjiā dōu tīng wǒ de!
And what good is swimming? Look at the red cloth on my leg! Everyone here listens to me!
- Narrator 一只大火鸡走了过来。他觉得，他是这里的大王。
Yì zhī dà huǒjī zǒu le guòlái. Tā juéde, tā shì zhèlǐ de dàwáng.
Then a big turkey strutted over. He thought he was king of the farmyard.
- The Turkey 喂！那个又大又灰的东西，是什么？
Wèi! Nàge yòu dà yòu huī de dōngxi, shì shénme?
Hey! What's that big gray thing?
- Big Sister 他是我弟弟，丑小鸭。我是第一个出来的！
Tā shì wǒ dìdi, Chǒu Xiǎoyā. Wǒ shì dì yī gè chūlái de!
That's my little brother, the Ugly Duckling. I'm the one who hatched first!
- The Turkey 丑小鸭？这么丑，出去！这是我的院子！
Chǒu Xiǎoyā? Zhème chǒu, chūqù! Zhè shì wǒ de yuànzi!
Ugly Duckling? Something that ugly? Out! This is my yard!
- The Ugly Duckling 他的脸好红……他怎么这么生气？
Tā de liǎn hǎo hóng… Tā zěnme zhème shēngqì?
His face is so red… Why is he so angry?
- Narrator 一只鸭子跑过来，打了丑小鸭一下。
Yì zhī yāzi pǎo guòlái, dǎ le Chǒu Xiǎoyā yíxià.
A duck ran up and pecked the Ugly Duckling.
- The Ugly Duckling 好疼！对不起，对不起……我做错了什么？
Hǎo téng! Duìbuqǐ, duìbuqǐ… Wǒ zuòcuò le shénme?
Ow, that hurts! Sorry, sorry… What did I do wrong?
- Mother Duck 别打他！他什么也没做！
Bié dǎ tā! Tā shénme yě méi zuò!
Leave him alone! He hasn't done anything!
- The Turkey 他太大了，太丑了！我们不要他！
Tā tài dà le, tài chǒu le! Wǒmen bú yào tā!
He's too big and too ugly! We don't want him here!
- Narrator 一天一天过去了。鸭子打他，鸡也打他，谁都不跟他玩。
Yì tiān yì tiān guòqù le. Yāzi dǎ tā, jī yě dǎ tā, shéi dōu bù gēn tā wán.
Day after day went by. The ducks nipped him, the hens pecked him, and nobody would play with him.
- The Ugly Duckling 姐姐，我能跟你们一起玩吗？
Jiějie, wǒ néng gēn nǐmen yìqǐ wán ma?
Sister, can I play with you?
- Big Sister 不！因为你，大家都笑我们！你走吧！
Bù! Yīnwèi nǐ, dàjiā dōu xiào wǒmen! Nǐ zǒu ba!
No! Everyone laughs at us because of you! Go away!
- Mother Duck 孩子，大家都不喜欢你……如果你在很远的地方，就好了。
Háizi, dàjiā dōu bù xǐhuan nǐ… Rúguǒ nǐ zài hěn yuǎn de dìfang, jiù hǎo le.
Oh, child, nobody likes you… If only you were somewhere far away.
- The Ugly Duckling 妈妈也不要我了……那我走吧。
Māma yě bú yào wǒ le… Nà wǒ zǒu ba.
Mama doesn't want me either… Then I'll go.
- Narrator 那天晚上，丑小鸭从院子里跑了出去。
Nà tiān wǎnshang, Chǒu Xiǎoyā cóng yuànzi lǐ pǎo le chūqù.
That night, the Ugly Duckling slipped out of the farmyard.
- The Ugly Duckling 再见，妈妈。再见，姐姐。
Zàijiàn, māma. Zàijiàn, jiějie.
Goodbye, Mama. Goodbye, Sister.
- The Ugly Duckling 小鸟们都飞走了……他们也怕我吗？因为我丑？
Xiǎoniǎomen dōu fēizǒu le… Tāmen yě pà wǒ ma? Yīnwèi wǒ chǒu?
The little birds have all flown off… Are they scared of me too? Because I'm ugly?
- The Ugly Duckling 好累啊……这里有一个大湖，没有人笑我。我睡一会儿吧。
Hǎo lèi a… Zhèlǐ yǒu yí gè dà hú, méiyǒu rén xiào wǒ. Wǒ shuì yíhuìr ba.
I'm so tired… There's a big lake here, and nobody to laugh at me. I'll sleep for a while.
- Narrator 第二天早上，“砰！砰！”湖边有很大的声音。
Dì èr tiān zǎoshang, “Pēng! Pēng!” Húbiān yǒu hěn dà de shēngyīn.
The next morning, bang! Bang! Loud noises rang out over the lake.
- The Ugly Duckling 什么声音？一只大狗！它向我跑过来了！
Shénme shēngyīn? Yì zhī dà gǒu! Tā xiàng wǒ pǎo guòlái le!
What was that? A big dog! It's running straight at me!
