Standing at the Door

On the third visit the Sleeping Dragon is at home, but sound asleep. Liu Bei will not let anyone wake him, and Zhang Fei has a rope and some very bad ideas.

Chūntiān dào le. Liú Bèi xǐ le zǎo, huàn le xīn yīfú. Tāmen dìsān cì qù Lóngzhōng.
Spring came. Liu Bei bathed and put on clean clothes. They rode to Longzhong for the third time.
- Zhang Fei 大哥，这次我带了一根很长的绳子！
Dàgē, zhè cì wǒ dài le yì gēn hěn zhǎng de shéngzi!
Big Brother, this time I brought a long rope!
- Liu Bei 绳子？你要做什么？
Shéngzi? Nǐ yào zuò shénme?
A rope? What do you want it for?

Sān dì, tā shì shūshēng, búshì yí dài mǐ.
Third Brother, he is a man, not a sack of rice.
- Liu Bei 三弟，请把绳子放下。我们是去请人，不然我就不带你了。
Sān dì, qǐng bǎ shéngzi fàng xià. Wǒmen shì qù qǐng rén, bùrán wǒ jiù bú dài nǐ le.
Third Brother, put the rope down. Or I won't take you.
- Zhang Fei 好好好。我放在马上。
Hǎo hǎo hǎo. Wǒ fàng zài mǎ shàng.
Fine, fine, fine. I'll leave it on the horse.
- Liu Bei 我们到了。大家小声一点儿。
Wǒmen dào le. Dàjiā xiǎoshēng yìdiǎnr.
We're here. Everyone, quietly please.
- Servant Boy 刘将军！你又来了！
Liú jiāngjūn! Nǐ yòu lái le!
General Liu! You came again!
- Liu Bei 小兄弟，先生在家吗？
Xiǎo xiōngdì, xiānshēng zài jiā ma?
Little brother, is the master at home?
- Servant Boy 在家。可是他在睡觉，已经睡了一个上午了。
Zài jiā. Kěshì tā zài shuìjiào, yǐjīng shuì le yí gè shàngwǔ le.
He's home. But he's sleeping.
- Zhang Fei 睡觉？太阳都这么高了！
Shuìjiào? Tàiyáng dōu zhème gāo le!
Sleeping? The sun is so high already!
- Liu Bei 不要叫醒他。他累了，我就在这里等。
Búyào jiào xǐng tā. Tā lèi le, wǒ jiù zài zhèlǐ děng.
Don't wake him. I will wait here.
- Guan Yu 大哥，你要站在门外等吗？今天天气很热。
Dàgē, nǐ yào zhàn zài ménwài děng ma? Jīntiān tiānqì hěn rè.
Big Brother, you'll wait standing outside?
- Liu Bei 对。我站着等。
Duì. Wǒ zhàn zhe děng.
Yes. I'll wait standing.
- Zhang Fei 站着等？我的腿会说话了！
Zhàn zhe děng? Wǒ de tuǐ huì shuōhuà le!
Standing and waiting? My legs are starting to talk!
- Guan Yu 那你的嘴可以休息一下了。
Nà nǐ de zuǐ kěyǐ xiūxī yí xià le.
Then your mouth can take a rest.
- Zhang Fei 我站不住了！我去后面放一把火，他就起来了！
Wǒ zhàn bú zhù le! Wǒ qù hòumiàn fàng yì bǎ huǒ, tā jiù qǐlái le!
I can't stand it! I'll go set a fire out back and he'll get up!
- Guan Yu 三弟！别说了！
Sān dì! Bié shuō le!
Third Brother! Stop!
- Liu Bei 三弟，请你安静。我们是来请人的。
Sān dì, qǐng nǐ ānjìng. Wǒmen shì lái qǐng rén de.
Third Brother, please be quiet. We came to ask for his help.
- Narrator 太阳慢慢地走。刘备一直站在门外，一动也不动。
Tàiyáng mànmàn dì zǒu. Liú Bèi yìzhí zhàn zài ménwài, yí dòng yě bú dòng.
The sun moved slowly. Liu Bei stood at the door the whole time.
- Guan Yu 大哥已经站了很久。先生还在睡。他怎么睡得着啊！
Dàgē yǐjīng zhàn le hěn jiǔ. Xiānshēng huán zài shuì. Tā zěnme shuì dé zhe a!
Big Brother has stood there so long, and the master is still asleep. How can he sleep so well!
- Liu Bei 二弟，让先生好好睡。我不累。
Èr dì, ràng xiānshēng hǎohǎo shuì. Wǒ bú lèi.
Second Brother, let the master sleep well. I am not tired.
- Servant Boy 我去看看。……啊，先生动了！
Wǒ qù kànkàn. …A, xiānshēng dòng le!
I'll go look. ...Oh, the master moved!
- Zhuge Liang 童子，有客人吗？
Tóngzi, yǒu kèrén ma?
Boy, do we have a guest?
- Servant Boy 有！刘将军在门外站了很久了！
Yǒu! Liú jiāngjūn zài ménwài zhàn le hěn jiǔ le!
Yes! General Liu has been standing outside for a long time!
- Zhuge Liang 很久？多久？……快请他进来。
Hěn jiǔ? Duō jiǔ? …Kuài qǐng tā jìnlái.
A long time? How long? ...Quick, ask him in.
- Liu Bei 诸葛先生，我是刘备。今天我终于见到你了。
Zhūgě xiānshēng, wǒ shì Liú Bèi. Jīntiān wǒ zhōngyú jiàn dào nǐ le.
Master Zhuge, I am Liu Bei. Today, at last, I have met you.
- Zhuge Liang 将军来了三次。我睡了很久，对不起。
Jiāngjūn lái le sān cì. Wǒ shuì le hěn jiǔ, duì bù qǐ.
General, you have come three times. I slept so long. I'm sorry.
- Liu Bei 没有关系。天下很乱，百姓很苦。我想帮他们，可是不知道怎么做才好。
Méiyǒu guānxì. Tiānxià hěn luàn, bǎixìng hěn kǔ. Wǒ xiǎng bāng tāmen, kěshì bù zhīdào zěnme zuò cái hǎo.
It's all right. The land is in chaos and the people suffer. I want to help, but I don't know how.
- Zhuge Liang 好。刘将军，你说老实话。你真的想要什么？
Hǎo. Liú jiāngjūn, nǐ shuō lǎo shíhuà. Nǐ zhēn de xiǎng yào shénme?
Good. General Liu, tell me honestly. What do you really want?
