上 and 下 are the school bell
上课 (shàng kè) means to start or attend a class and 下课 (xià kè) means to finish one. Up and down have nothing to do with it: 上 begins a scheduled activity and 下 ends it, which is exactly how 上班 and 下班 mark the working day. Once the pattern is visible, whole families of verbs stop needing separate memorization.
One morpheme, four words
学 (xué) runs through 学校, 学生, 同学 and 学习. A school is a learning place, a student is a learning person, and 同学 is someone in the same learning, so it means classmate and is also how a teacher addresses a student. 铅笔 hides a small picture: 笔 is 竹 (bamboo) over 毛 (hair), the brush that pens and pencils inherited their name from. The 馆 of 图书馆 carries 饣, the same food radical as 饭馆, left over from when a 馆 was a hall where guests were fed.
