我会用拼音打汉字。 · Wǒ huì yòng pīnyīn dǎ Hànzì. · I can type Chinese characters with pinyin.

By the end you can

  • Know what each part of Chinese B (1153) asks you to do. One page on the typed writing paper, the multiple-choice paper, and the oral and listening, with a useful opening line for each task.
我先说我的看法。 · Wǒ xiān shuō wǒ de kànfǎ. · Let me give my view first.
  • Pick the right character when pinyin input offers several. Choose between 在 and 再, 的, 得 and 地, and 买 and 卖, and type ü as v, so the characters you send are the ones you meant.
我们明天再见! · Wǒmen míngtiān zàijiàn! · See you again tomorrow!
  • Plan and type a 150-character email. Show your cousin round Singapore, then invite Lin Hao to a beach clean-up at East Coast Park, each with a plan in notes, linking words such as 先, 然后 and 所以, and a model.
祝你一切顺利! · Zhù nǐ yíqiè shùnlì! · All the best!
  • Write a picture composition with a beginning, a middle and an ending. Plan a story about helping a grandma in the rain, add feeling words such as 着急 and 感动, give it a title and compare it with the model.
图片里有一个男孩和他的妈妈。 · Túpiàn lǐ yǒu yí ge nánhái hé tā de māma. · In the picture there is a boy and his mother.
  • Answer multiple-choice reading and language questions. Choose words, measure words, replies and the sentence with correct word order, then read a notice and a message and find the line that proves each answer.
答案在第二句里。 · Dá'àn zài dì-èr jù lǐ. · The answer is in the second sentence.
  • Answer oral questions with a view, a reason and an example. Two topics, healthy eating at the canteen and exercise in the park, each with three questions, model answers and a follow-up question to answer yourself.
我觉得最重要的是健康。 · Wǒ juéde zuì zhòngyào de shì jiànkāng. · I think health matters most.
  • Listen for changes of plan. A school announcement, a chat between Lin Hao and Xiaoyu and a teacher's phone message, with multiple-choice questions on times, places and reasons.
明天的运动会改到下午了。 · Míngtiān de yùndònghuì gǎi dào xiàwǔ le. · Tomorrow's sports day has moved to the afternoon.

How to use this book

Six weeks, one part at a time, as on the planner on page 13. Type with pinyin input and time yourself, and say three model sentences aloud with the free audio every day.

  1. Week 1: The exam and typing. Read page 3. Type with pinyin input for 10 minutes a day, do page 4 and list the characters you mix up.
  2. Week 2: Writing 1. Plan for 5 minutes, type for 30, then compare with the model in the key. Count your characters: at least 150.
  3. Week 3: Writing 2. Tell the picture story aloud first, then type it with a title, a beginning, a middle and an ending.
  4. Week 4: Writing 3 and Reading 1. For each multiple-choice answer, underline the line that proves it.
  5. Week 5: Reading 2 and the oral. Record each oral answer with the timer, listen back and fix one thing.
  6. Week 6: Listening and a mock. Do the listening page twice with the audio, then a 50-minute typed composition and one recorded oral topic.
