How to use this book

One page a day, one exchange in the order people say it: someone asks, you answer, then you ask back. Play the audio, say each line in the pause, then make one new line of your own with the day's pattern.

  1. Days 1–4: Openers. Break the ice, chat about the weather, ask about favourite food and ask what someone did at the weekend.
  2. Days 5–8: Getting to know someone. Where you live, how busy you are, a dog in the park and the apps you use.
  3. Days 9–11: Finding common ground. Places you've been, a compliment, and a shared hobby found with 也.
  4. Days 12–14: From a chat to a friendship. Swap WeChat, make a plan to meet for a meal, and end the chat warmly.
  5. Every day: Use it the same day. Try the first line on a friend, classmate or colleague who speaks Mandarin, even if it is only one line.

Who it’s for

Adult beginners who want to chat with the Mandarin speakers they meet, in a café, a class, the office or the park, and turn a first conversation into a friendship.

Before you start: Nothing. Every line has characters, pinyin and English, and the free audio reads each one with a pause to say it back. From Day 1 you learn 你呢?, so you always have a question to ask back.
