Frequently asked questions
When do I use 二 and when do I use 两?
Use 二 for counting, digits, dates, and positions such as 二月 or 二十. 两 is common before classifiers and place-value units, as in 两个人 or 两百. Some contexts allow variation.
Are 元 and 块 different currencies?
No. 元 is the standard unit name and 块 is the everyday spoken unit word in prices. 角 is the formal tenth and 毛 is the everyday spoken tenth.
Why is the year read digit by digit?
Calendar years are normally read as a digit string before 年: 2026 is 二〇二六年, not 两千零二十六年 in an ordinary date.
Why does 一 sometimes sound like yí or yì?
Its spoken tone changes before some following tones. This workbook shows common phrase pronunciation while keeping 一 as the written character.
