Frequently asked questions
Should I rewrite dictionary pinyin with the changed tone?
No. This workbook keeps the dictionary tone as the stable spelling and puts a separate surface cue beside it. That prevents a pronunciation change from being mistaken for a different lexical tone.
Does every third tone make a full fall-and-rise?
No. Before many following syllables, a third tone is commonly realized low and shortened. A fuller contour is easier to hear in isolation or before a pause.
Were these phrases checked against recordings or a human pronunciation review?
No. They are written, rule-based teaching cues grounded in the cited sources. They do not claim acoustic measurement, native-speaker review, or audio validation.
Can I apply one simple pattern to a long chain of third tones?
Not reliably. Longer chains can group differently with word structure, syntax, emphasis, and prosodic boundaries. This beginner workbook makes firm predictions only for short, clear cases.
