YCT 2 Practice for Kids: 70 New Words, Listening and Reading

By the end you can

• Say and read the 70 new YCT 2 words. Nine card pages, from 包子 to 做, each word with a picture, pinyin, its meaning and a short example sentence to say together.

• Hear a sentence and tick or cross the picture. The first YCT 2 listening type: look at a picture, listen, and tick it if it matches or cross it if it doesn't.
  我喜欢熊猫。 · Wǒ xǐhuan xióngmāo. · I like pandas.
• Listen for colours, prices and minutes. Pick out 红, 黄 and 绿, a price in 块, and how many minutes, then choose A, B or C.
  一个包子三块钱。 · Yí ge bāozi sān kuài qián. · One steamed bun is three yuan.
• Choose the right answer to a spoken question. Hear a question such as 你叫什么名字？ and pick the reply that fits, then follow Lele as he talks through his day.
  我早上七点起床。 · Wǒ zǎoshang qī diǎn qǐchuáng. · I get up at seven in the morning.
• Read words and sentences and match them to pictures. Tick or cross a word against a picture, and choose which of three pictures a sentence describes.
  猫在桌子上边。 · Māo zài zhuōzi shàngbian. · The cat is on the desk.
• Fill gaps with the YCT 2 words. Match questions to answers such as 包子怎么样？ and 很好吃！, then fill gaps from a word box with 比, 也, 会, 买 and 做, and choose a measure word such as 只.

• Read a short note and check what it says. Read Duoduo's three-line note about herself and tick or cross each sentence about it.

• Finish a two-page mini practice test in the YCT 2 format. Four listening questions and five reading questions in four parts, with every answer and the full audio script in the key at the back.

How to use this book

Keep each session to about 10 minutes: one card page with the free audio (3 minutes), half a practice page (5 minutes), then the page's "Say it" task (2 minutes). A few sessions a week takes about five weeks.

1. Weeks 1–2: The word cards. Pages 3 to 11. Play each card page and repeat every word in the pause. When a word feels easy, cover the pinyin and see if your child can still read it.
2. Week 3: Listening. Pages 12 to 15. Play each track twice and let your child answer before you check.
3. Week 4: Reading. Pages 16 to 19. Tick and cross, match questions to answers, fill the gaps and read Duoduo's note.
4. Week 5: Mini test. Pages 20 and 21 in one sitting, then mark them together with the answer key at the back.
5. Afterwards: Go back to the misses. Read the audio script in the key for any listening question your child missed, play that track again, and replay the card page for any word that slipped.

Who it’s for

Children aged 7 to 10 preparing for YCT 2, with a parent at home or a teacher in class who wants practice in the YCT 2 format.

Before you start: The YCT 1 words. If they still feel new, start with YCT 1 Practice for Kids. Grown-ups don't need to speak Chinese: pinyin sits above every character, and the answer key has every answer and the full audio script.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cover every new YCT 2 word?

Yes. The card pages hold all 70 new YCT 2 words, eight to a page with six on the last, and the practice pages use them in YCT 2 question types.

Is there audio for the listening pages?

Yes, free on this book's page on saymei.app, and the QR code in the book opens it. Every Chinese line is recorded with a pause to say it back. Play each listening track twice, as the book suggests.

Is the mini test a full YCT 2 paper?

No. It is a short two-page practice test in the YCT 2 format, with four listening and five reading questions, so your child can try each question type before a full paper.

Is this workbook free?
