The Third Disciple
沙和尚
Guanyin asks Wukong one simple question, and he doesn't like the answer. Then one name, called twice, brings up the river monster faster than a whole day of fighting.

- Narrator 第二天早上，悟空一个筋斗云，飞到了南海，去找观音菩萨。
Dì-èr tiān zǎoshang, Wùkōng yí gè jīndǒuyún, fēi dào le Nán Hǎi, qù zhǎo Guānyīn Púsà.
The next morning, Wukong took one somersault on his cloud and flew to the Southern Sea to find Guanyin.
- Sun Wukong 菩萨，流沙河里有一个妖怪，不让我们过河！
Púsà, Liúshā Hé lǐ yǒu yí gè yāoguài, bú ràng wǒmen guò hé!
Guanyin, there's a monster in the Flowing Sand River, and he won't let us cross!
- Guanyin 悟空，你跟他说了吗？你们是去西天取经的。
Wùkōng, nǐ gēn tā shuō le ma? Nǐmen shì qù Xītiān qǔjīng de.
Wukong, did you tell him? That you're on your way to the West for the scriptures?

Zhège… méi shuō. Lǎo Sūn zhǐ shuō le… kàn bàng.
Well... no. All Old Sun said was... "Here comes my staff."
- Guanyin 你这只猴子，总是这样！那个妖怪，也在等取经的人啊。
Nǐ zhè zhī hóuzi, zǒngshì zhèyàng! Nàge yāoguài, yě zài děng qǔjīng de rén a.
Oh, you monkey, you're always like this! That monster has been waiting for the pilgrim too.
- Guanyin 木叉，你拿着这个红葫芦，跟悟空去。你叫他悟净，他就会出来。
Mùchā, nǐ názhe zhège hóng húlu, gēn Wùkōng qù. Nǐ jiào tā Wùjìng, tā jiù huì chūlái.
Muzha, take this red gourd and go with Wukong. Call him by the name Wujing, and he'll come out.
- Sun Wukong 悟净？那个妖怪叫悟净？
Wùjìng? Nàge yāoguài jiào Wùjìng?
Wujing? That monster's name is Wujing?
- Guanyin 对，这是我给他起的名字。他听到这个名字，就知道是我让你们来的。
Duì, zhè shì wǒ gěi tā qǐ de míngzi. Tā tīngdào zhège míngzi, jiù zhīdào shì wǒ ràng nǐmen lái de.
Yes. I gave him that name myself. When he hears it, he'll know I'm the one who sent you.
- Muzha 是，师父！悟空，我们走！
Shì, shīfu! Wùkōng, wǒmen zǒu!
Yes, Master! Come on, Wukong, let's go!
- Narrator 悟空和木叉回到了河边。八戒正坐在河边等着。
Wùkōng hé Mùchā huí dào le hé biān. Bājiè zhèng zuò zài hé biān děngzhe.
Wukong and Muzha went back to the river, where Bajie sat waiting on the bank.
- Zhu Bajie 猴哥，你终于回来了！菩萨给了你什么好吃的吗？
Hóugē, nǐ zhōngyú huílái le! Púsà gěi le nǐ shénme hǎochī de ma?
Brother Monkey, you're back at last! Did Guanyin give you anything good to eat?
- Sun Wukong 呆子，就知道吃！你等着看吧，木叉有办法。
Dāizi, jiù zhīdào chī! Nǐ děngzhe kàn ba, Mùchā yǒu bànfǎ.
Dummy, food is all you think about! Just wait and see. Muzha knows what to do.
- Muzha 悟净！悟净！取经的人来了，快出来吧！
Wùjìng! Wùjìng! Qǔjīng de rén lái le, kuài chūlái ba!
Wujing! Wujing! The pilgrim is here! Come on out!
- Narrator 木叉只叫了两声，那个妖怪就从水里出来了。
Mùchā zhǐ jiào le liǎng shēng, nàge yāoguài jiù cóng shuǐ lǐ chūlái le.
Muzha called only twice, and up came the monster out of the water.
- Zhu Bajie 什么？我们跟你打了一天，你都不出来。他叫两声，你就出来了？
Shénme? Wǒmen gēn nǐ dǎ le yì tiān, nǐ dōu bù chūlái. Tā jiào liǎng shēng, nǐ jiù chūlái le?
What? We fought you all day and you wouldn't come out. He calls twice, and up you pop?
- Sha Wujing 取经的人在哪儿？我在这里等了很多年了！
Qǔjīng de rén zài nǎr? Wǒ zài zhèlǐ děng le hěn duō nián le!
Where is the pilgrim? I've waited here for years and years!
- Muzha 就是河边那位师父。这两个，是他的徒弟。
Jiù shì hé biān nà wèi shīfu. Zhè liǎng gè, shì tā de túdì.
It's that master there by the river. And these two are his disciples.
- Sha Wujing 啊？你们是取经人的徒弟？那你们怎么不早说？
A? Nǐmen shì qǔjīngrén de túdì? Nà nǐmen zěnme bù zǎo shuō?
What? You're the pilgrim's disciples? Then why didn't you say so?
- Zhu Bajie 你也没问啊！
Nǐ yě méi wèn a!
You never asked!
- Sun Wukong 呆子，这是老孙的话！
Dāizi, zhè shì Lǎo Sūn de huà!
Hey, dummy, that's Old Sun's line!
- Narrator 那个妖怪走到唐僧面前，跪了下来。
Nàge yāoguài zǒu dào Táng Sēng miànqián, guì le xiàlái.
The monster walked up to Tang Seng and knelt before him.
- Sha Wujing 师父，我叫沙悟净。以后，我跟着您去西天！
Shīfu, wǒ jiào Shā Wùjìng. Yǐhòu, wǒ gēnzhe nín qù Xītiān!
Master, my name is Sha Wujing. From now on, I'll follow you to the West!
- Tang Seng 好，好！你从流沙河来，我就叫你沙和尚吧。
Hǎo, hǎo! Nǐ cóng Liúshā Hé lái, wǒ jiù jiào nǐ Shā Héshang ba.
Good, good! You come from the Flowing Sand River, so I'll call you Sha Heshang, Monk Sha.
- Sha Wujing 谢谢师父。这些行李，以后我来拿吧。
Xièxie shīfu. Zhèxiē xíngli, yǐhòu wǒ lái ná ba.
Thank you, Master. From now on, let me carry the luggage.
- Zhu Bajie 好师弟！你来得太好了！老猪早就拿累了！
Hǎo shīdì! Nǐ lái de tài hǎo le! Lǎo Zhū zǎo jiù ná lèi le!
Good little brother! You couldn't have come at a better time! Old Pig got tired of carrying it ages ago!
- Sun Wukong 沙师弟，记住，我是大师兄。他呢，是二师兄。
Shā shīdì, jìzhù, wǒ shì dà shīxiōng. Tā ne, shì èr shīxiōng.
Brother Sha, remember: I'm Big Brother. And he's Second Brother.
- Zhu Bajie 对！我是二师兄！以后有好吃的，要先给二师兄！
Duì! Wǒ shì èr shīxiōng! Yǐhòu yǒu hǎochī de, yào xiān gěi èr shīxiōng!
That's right! I'm Second Brother! From now on, anything good to eat goes to Second Brother first!
- Sha Wujing 是，大师兄。是，二师兄。
Shì, dà shīxiōng. Shì, èr shīxiōng.
Yes, Big Brother. Yes, Second Brother.
- Tang Seng 悟净，你为什么一个人住在这条河里呢？
Wùjìng, nǐ wèishénme yí gè rén zhù zài zhè tiáo hé lǐ ne?
Wujing, why were you living all alone in this river?
- Sha Wujing 师父……我以前，也住在天上。可是有一天，我做错了一件事……
Shīfu… wǒ yǐqián, yě zhù zài tiānshàng. Kěshì yǒu yì tiān, wǒ zuò cuò le yí jiàn shì…
Master... I used to live in heaven, too. But one day, I did something wrong...
