- Xu Man 你写了“不去”。我不同意。你要去上海。
Nǐ xiě le “bú qù”. Wǒ bù tóngyì. Nǐ yào qù Shànghǎi.
You wrote “not going.” I don't agree. You're going to Shanghai.
- He Yan 我不想离开这里，也不想离开你。
Wǒ bù xiǎng líkāi zhèlǐ, yě bù xiǎng líkāi nǐ.
I don't want to leave here, or leave you.
- Xu Man 三个月不长。春天你就回来了。
Sān gè yuè bù cháng. Chūntiān nǐ jiù huílái le.
Three months isn't long. You'll be back by spring.

Sān gè yuè, wǒmen bù néng zuò zài zhè zhāng zhuōzi xiě zì.
For three months, we can't sit at this table and write.
- Xu Man 我们可以写信。你写，我回。每个星期都写。
Wǒmen kěyǐ xiě xìn. Nǐ xiě, wǒ huí. Měi gè xīngqī dōu xiě.
We can write letters. You write, I answer. Every week.
- He Yan 信太慢了。我想现在就和你说话。
Xìn tài màn le. Wǒ xiǎng xiànzài jiù hé nǐ shuōhuà.
Letters are too slow. I want to talk to you right now.
- Xu Man 你忘了？我们的第一张纸条，也是慢慢等来的。
Nǐ wàng le? Wǒmen de dì yī zhāng zhǐtiáo, yě shì mànmàn děng lái de.
Did you forget? Our first note also took a long time to arrive.
- He Yan 你会等我吗？
Nǐ huì děng wǒ ma?
Will you wait for me?
- Xu Man 会。每个星期六，我都在这里。
Huì. Měi gè xīngqīliù, wǒ dōu zài zhèlǐ.
Yes. Every Saturday, I'll be right here.
- He Yan 好。我去。你要等我。
Hǎo. Wǒ qù. Nǐ yào děng wǒ.
Okay. I'll go. You have to wait for me.
- Xu Man 真的吗？你真的去吗？
Zhēn de ma? Nǐ zhēn de qù ma?
Really? You're really going?
- He Yan 真的。我们要有两本书。你留一本，我带一本。
Zhēn de. Wǒmen yào yǒu liǎng běn shū. Nǐ liú yì běn, wǒ dài yì běn.
Really. We need two books. You keep one, I take one.
- Xu Man 好！你写你的，我写我的。
Hǎo! Nǐ xiě nǐ de, wǒ xiě wǒ de.
Deal! You write yours, I write mine.
- He Yan 我们的字，会在中间见面。
Wǒmen de zì, huì zài zhōngjiān jiànmiàn.
Our words will meet in the middle.
- Grandma 车站的人真多！何言，在这边！
Chēzhàn de rén zhēn duō! Hé Yán, zài zhè biān!
So many people at the station! He Yan, over here!
- Grandma 何言！包子带了吗？还有水！
Hé Yán! Bāozi dài le ma? Hái yǒu shuǐ!
He Yan! Did you bring the buns? And water!
- Grandma 到了上海，要好好吃饭，要早点睡觉。
Dào le Shànghǎi, yào hǎohāo chī fàn, yào zǎo diǎn shuìjiào.
When you get to Shanghai, eat properly and go to bed early.
- He Yan 谢谢奶奶，我会的。
Xièxie nǎinai, wǒ huì de.
Thank you, Grandma. I will.
- Xu Man 下雨的时候，要带伞。你总是忘。
Xià yǔ de shíhou, yào dài sǎn. Nǐ zǒngshì wàng.
When it rains, take an umbrella. You always forget.
- Grandma 孩子，快去吧。车要走了。
Háizi, kuài qù ba. Chē yào zǒu le.
Off you go, dear. The train's about to leave.
- He Yan 许……曼。
Xǔ... Màn.
Xu... Man.
- Xu Man 你……你叫我的名字了？你说话了？
Nǐ... nǐ jiào wǒ de míngzi le? Nǐ shuōhuà le?
You... you said my name? You spoke?
- He Yan 许曼。我会写信。你要等我。
Xǔ Màn. Wǒ huì xiě xìn. Nǐ yào děng wǒ.
Xu Man. I'll write letters. You wait for me.
- Grandma 哎呀，我的眼睛里进沙子了。
Āiyā, wǒ de yǎnjing lǐ jìn shāzi le.
Oh dear, I've got sand in my eye.
- He Yan 奶奶，谢谢您的饺子。
Nǎinai, xièxie nín de jiǎozi.
Grandma, thank you for the dumplings.
- Auntie Zhou 许曼，有你的信！何言走了一个星期了。
Xǔ Màn, yǒu nǐ de xìn! Hé Yán zǒu le yí gè xīngqī le.
Xu Man, there's a letter for you! It's been a week since He Yan left.
- Xu Man 是何言写的吗？他这么快就写了？
Shì Hé Yán xiě de ma? Tā zhème kuài jiù xiě le?
Is it from He Yan? He's writing already?
- Auntie Zhou 信封上没有名字，也没有地址。
Xìnfēng shang méiyǒu míngzi, yě méiyǒu dìzhǐ.
There's no name and no address on the envelope.
- Xu Man 那是谁写的？
Nà shì shéi xiě de?
Then who wrote it?
- Auntie Zhou 不知道。信封上只有一句话：“下雨的时候再看。”
Bù zhīdào. Xìnfēng shang zhǐyǒu yí jù huà: “Xià yǔ de shíhou zài kàn.”
I don't know. There's only one line on the envelope: “Open when it rains.”
