The music was coming from a big theater, and a great crowd stood at its door.
- Pinocchio 木偶大表演！门票四块钱！……可是我一块钱也没有。
Mù'ǒu dà biǎoyǎn! Ménpiào sì kuài qián! … Kěshì wǒ yí kuài qián yě méiyǒu.
"The Great Puppet Show! Tickets: four coins!" ...But I haven't got a single coin.
- Pinocchio 我只有这本新书……卖了它，就能进去了。
Wǒ zhǐ yǒu zhè běn xīn shū… Mài le tā, jiù néng jìnqù le.
All I've got is this new book... If I sell it, I can get in.

Bù xíng, zhè shì bàba mài le dàyī mǎi de! … Jiù kàn yí cì. Míngtiān yídìng qù shàngxué, wǒ bǎozhèng!
No! Papa sold his coat to buy this! ...Just this once. I'll go to school tomorrow for sure. I promise!
- Narrator 匹诺曹卖了新书，买了一张门票，跑进了戏院。
Pǐnuòcáo mài le xīn shū, mǎi le yì zhāng ménpiào, pǎo jìn le xìyuàn.
Pinocchio sold his new book, bought a ticket, and ran into the theater.
- Harlequin 大家看！台下那个是匹诺曹！我们的木头兄弟！
Dàjiā kàn! Tái xià nàge shì Pǐnuòcáo! Wǒmen de mùtou xiōngdì!
Look, everyone! That's Pinocchio down there! Our wooden brother!
- Pinocchio 你是阿莱基诺吧？你们认识我？我来了，兄弟们！
Nǐ shì Āláijīnuò ba? Nǐmen rènshi wǒ? Wǒ lái le, xiōngdìmen!
You're Harlequin, aren't you? You all know me? Here I come, brothers!
- Narrator 匹诺曹跳上了台。木偶们都跑到他身边，谁也不演戏了。
Pǐnuòcáo tiào shàng le tái. Mù'ǒumen dōu pǎo dào tā shēnbiān, shéi yě bù yǎnxì le.
Pinocchio leapt up onto the stage. All the puppets crowded around him, and nobody went on with the show.
- Narrator 这时，吃火人走了出来。他又高又大，黑胡子一直长到地上。
Zhè shí, Chīhuǒrén zǒu le chūlái. Tā yòu gāo yòu dà, hēi húzi yìzhí zhǎng dào dì shang.
Just then, Fire-Eater came out. He was enormous, and his black beard hung all the way down to the floor.
- Fire-Eater 是谁？谁让我的木偶不演了？是你这个新木偶吗？
Shì shéi? Shéi ràng wǒ de mù'ǒu bù yǎn le? Shì nǐ zhège xīn mù'ǒu ma?
Who is it? Who stopped my puppets' show? Was it you, you new puppet?
- Harlequin 主人，别生气！他是我们的好朋友……
Zhǔrén, bié shēngqì! Tā shì wǒmen de hǎo péngyou…
Please don't be angry, Master! He's our good friend...
- Fire-Eater 好！等演完了，我再来找他！
Hǎo! Děng yǎn wán le, wǒ zài lái zhǎo tā!
Fine! When the show's over, I'll deal with him!
- Narrator 晚上，吃火人要做羊肉吃。可是火太小了，木头也不够了。
Wǎnshang, Chīhuǒrén yào zuò yángròu chī. Kěshì huǒ tài xiǎo le, mùtou yě bú gòu le.
That evening, Fire-Eater was cooking lamb for his dinner. But the fire was too small, and he had run out of wood.
- Fire-Eater 把那个新木偶拿来！他是干木头，放进火里正好！
Bǎ nàge xīn mù'ǒu ná lái! Tā shì gān mùtou, fàng jìn huǒ lǐ zhènghǎo!
Bring me that new puppet! He's nice dry wood, just right for the fire!
- Pinocchio 爸爸，救救我！我不要进火里！爸爸！
Bàba, jiùjiu wǒ! Wǒ bú yào jìn huǒ lǐ! Bàba!
Papa, save me! I don't want to go in the fire! Papa!
- Fire-Eater 啊……啊……阿嚏！
A… a… ātì!
Ah... ah... ACHOO!
- Harlequin 匹诺曹，别怕！主人一打喷嚏，就是心里难过了！
Pǐnuòcáo, bié pà! Zhǔrén yì dǎ pēntì, jiù shì xīnli nánguò le!
Don't be scared, Pinocchio! When the master sneezes, it means he feels sorry for you!
- Fire-Eater 木偶，别哭了。你有爸爸吗？
Mù'ǒu, bié kū le. Nǐ yǒu bàba ma?
Stop crying, puppet. Have you got a father?
- Pinocchio 有！我爸爸没有钱。他卖了大衣，给我买上学的书……
Yǒu! Wǒ bàba méiyǒu qián. Tā mài le dàyī, gěi wǒ mǎi shàngxué de shū…
Yes! My papa hasn't got any money. He sold his coat to buy me a book for school...
- Fire-Eater 阿嚏！可怜的老人……好吧，我不烧你了。
Ātì! Kělián de lǎorén… Hǎo ba, wǒ bù shāo nǐ le.
ACHOO! The poor old man... All right. I won't burn you.
- Fire-Eater 可是羊肉还没熟。来人！把阿莱基诺放进火里！
Kěshì yángròu hái méi shú. Lái rén! Bǎ Āláijīnuò fàng jìn huǒ lǐ!
But my lamb isn't cooked yet. Guards! Throw Harlequin on the fire instead!
- Harlequin 主人，不要啊！救救我！
Zhǔrén, bú yào a! Jiùjiu wǒ!
No, Master, please! Somebody save me!
- Pinocchio 不行！阿莱基诺是我的好朋友！要烧，就烧我吧！
Bù xíng! Āláijīnuò shì wǒ de hǎo péngyou! Yào shāo, jiù shāo wǒ ba!
No! Harlequin is my good friend! If you have to burn someone, burn me!
- Narrator 吃火人看着这个小木偶，看了很久很久。
Chīhuǒrén kànzhe zhège xiǎo mù'ǒu, kàn le hěn jiǔ hěn jiǔ.
Fire-Eater looked at the little puppet for a long, long time.
- Fire-Eater 阿嚏！阿嚏！好孩子！今天我谁也不烧了！羊肉不熟，我也吃！
Ātì! Ātì! Hǎo háizi! Jīntiān wǒ shéi yě bù shāo le! Yángròu bù shú, wǒ yě chī!
ACHOO! ACHOO! Good boy! I'm not burning anybody tonight! I'll eat my lamb half-raw!
- Harlequin 谢谢你，匹诺曹！你真是我们的好兄弟！
Xièxie nǐ, Pǐnuòcáo! Nǐ zhēn shì wǒmen de hǎo xiōngdì!
Thank you, Pinocchio! You're a true brother to us!
- Narrator 第二天早上，吃火人给了匹诺曹五个金币。
Dì'èr tiān zǎoshang, Chīhuǒrén gěi le Pǐnuòcáo wǔ gè jīnbì.
The next morning, Fire-Eater gave Pinocchio five gold coins.
- Fire-Eater 拿去给你爸爸，让他买一件新大衣！
Ná qù gěi nǐ bàba, ràng tā mǎi yí jiàn xīn dàyī!
Take these to your father, and tell him to buy himself a new coat!
- Pinocchio 谢谢您，吃火人先生！爸爸，我这就回家！
Xièxie nín, Chīhuǒrén xiānsheng! Bàba, wǒ zhè jiù huí jiā!
Thank you, Mr. Fire-Eater! Papa, I'm coming home right now!
- Pinocchio 一、二、三、四、五！五个金币！爸爸一定高兴死了！
Yī, èr, sān, sì, wǔ! Wǔ gè jīnbì! Bàba yídìng gāoxìng sǐ le!
One, two, three, four, five! Five gold coins! Papa's going to be so happy!
- The Fox 五个金币？……早上好啊，小朋友！
Wǔ gè jīnbì? … Zǎoshang hǎo a, xiǎo péngyou!
Five gold coins, you say? ...Well, good morning, little friend!
