Inside the Shark
大鲨鱼
Down in the sea, a donkey turns back into a puppet, and a shark as big as a house is waiting. Somewhere in the dark, a small light is burning.

The man led the little donkey down to the sea, tied a rope to it, and pushed it into the water.
- The Buyer 好了，拉上来吧……怎么这么轻？啊？我的驴呢？
Hǎo le, lā shànglái ba… Zěnme zhème qīng? A? Wǒ de lǘ ne?
Right, time to pull it up... Why's it so light? Huh? Where's my donkey?
- Pinocchio 先生，我就是你的驴啊！海里的小鱼把驴皮都吃了，我又变回木头了！
Xiānsheng, wǒ jiù shì nǐ de lǘ a! Hǎi lǐ de xiǎo yú bǎ lǘ pí dōu chī le, wǒ yòu biàn huí mùtou le!
I am your donkey, sir! The little fish nibbled away all the donkey skin, and now I'm wood again!

No drum today! Goodbye, sir!
- Pinocchio 啊，那是什么？一条大鲨鱼！它的嘴比房子还大！救命啊！
A, nà shì shénme? Yì tiáo dà shāyú! Tā de zuǐ bǐ fángzi hái dà! Jiùmìng a!
Aah, what's that? A huge shark! Its mouth is bigger than a house! Help!
- Narrator 大鲨鱼一口就把匹诺曹吃了下去。鲨鱼的肚子里，又黑又冷。
Dà shāyú yì kǒu jiù bǎ Pǐnuòcáo chī le xiàqù. Shāyú de dùzi lǐ, yòu hēi yòu lěng.
The great shark swallowed Pinocchio in one gulp. Inside the shark it was dark and cold.
- Pinocchio 好黑啊……那边有一点儿光？……一张小桌子，一个老人……
Hǎo hēi a… Nà biān yǒu yìdiǎnr guāng? … Yì zhāng xiǎo zhuōzi, yí gè lǎorén…
It's so dark... Is that a light over there? ...A little table, and an old man...
- Geppetto 谁？谁在那儿？
Shéi? Shéi zài nàr?
Who's that? Who's there?
- Pinocchio 这个声音……爸爸！是我，匹诺曹！
Zhège shēngyīn… Bàba! Shì wǒ, Pǐnuòcáo!
That voice... Papa! It's me, Pinocchio!
- Geppetto 匹诺曹？我的孩子！真的是你吗？
Pǐnuòcáo? Wǒ de háizi! Zhēn de shì nǐ ma?
Pinocchio? My boy! Is it really you?
- Pinocchio 爸爸，真的是你！你怎么会在这里？
Bàba, zhēn de shì nǐ! Nǐ zěnme huì zài zhèlǐ?
Papa, it really is you! How did you end up in here?
- Geppetto 我坐小船去找你，大鲨鱼把船和我都吃了。我在这里，快两年了。
Wǒ zuò xiǎo chuán qù zhǎo nǐ, dà shāyú bǎ chuán hé wǒ dōu chī le. Wǒ zài zhèlǐ, kuài liǎng nián le.
I went out in a little boat to look for you, and the shark swallowed the boat and me with it. I've been in here almost two years.
- Geppetto 你看，这是最后一支蜡烛了。蜡烛没有了，我们就什么也看不见了。
Nǐ kàn, zhè shì zuìhòu yì zhī làzhú le. Làzhú méiyǒu le, wǒmen jiù shénme yě kàn bú jiàn le.
Look, this is my very last candle. When it's gone, we won't be able to see a thing.
- Pinocchio 爸爸，别怕，我带你出去！我保证！这一次，一定是真的！
Bàba, bié pà, wǒ dài nǐ chūqù! Wǒ bǎozhèng! Zhè yí cì, yídìng shì zhēn de!
Don't be scared, Papa. I'll get you out of here! I promise! And this time, it's for real!
- Narrator 那天晚上，大鲨鱼睡着了。它睡觉的时候，嘴总是开着。
Nà tiān wǎnshang, dà shāyú shuìzháo le. Tā shuìjiào de shíhou, zuǐ zǒngshì kāizhe.
That night the shark fell asleep, and whenever it slept, its mouth hung wide open.
- Pinocchio 爸爸，快坐到我背上来！我是木头做的，很会游泳！
Bàba, kuài zuò dào wǒ bèi shang lái! Wǒ shì mùtou zuò de, hěn huì yóuyǒng!
Papa, quick, climb onto my back! I'm made of wood. I'm a wonderful swimmer!
- Geppetto 可是……我不会游泳啊！
Kěshì… wǒ bú huì yóuyǒng a!
But... I can't swim!
- Pinocchio 我会！抓好我，我们走！
Wǒ huì! Zhuā hǎo wǒ, wǒmen zǒu!
I can! Hold on tight. Here we go!
- Narrator 匹诺曹游啊游，游了一个晚上。早上，他们到了海边。
Pǐnuòcáo yóu a yóu, yóu le yí gè wǎnshang. Zǎoshang, tāmen dào le hǎi biān.
Pinocchio swam and swam, all night long. In the morning they reached the shore.
- Geppetto 我们出来了……匹诺曹，是你救了我！
Wǒmen chūlái le… Pǐnuòcáo, shì nǐ jiù le wǒ!
We're out... Pinocchio, you saved me!
- Pinocchio 爸爸，以后我来照顾你。
Bàba, yǐhòu wǒ lái zhàogù nǐ.

Cóng nà tiān qǐ, Pǐnuòcáo tiāntiān gōngzuò, gěi bàba mǎi niúnǎi. Wǎnshang, tā hái xuéxí xiě zì.
From that day on, Pinocchio worked every day to buy milk for his father, and at night he practiced his writing.
- Narrator 一天晚上，他梦见了那个蓝头发的仙女。
Yì tiān wǎnshang, tā mèngjiàn le nàge lán tóufa de xiānnǚ.
One night, he dreamed of the fairy with blue hair.
- The Fairy with Blue Hair 匹诺曹，你照顾爸爸，是一个好孩子。我都看见了。
Pǐnuòcáo, nǐ zhàogù bàba, shì yí gè hǎo háizi. Wǒ dōu kànjiàn le.
Pinocchio, you've taken care of your father like a good boy. I've seen it all.
- Pinocchio 早上了……啊？我的手，不是木头的！我的鼻子，也变小了！
Zǎoshang le… A? Wǒ de shǒu, bú shì mùtou de! Wǒ de bízi, yě biàn xiǎo le!
It's morning... Huh? My hands aren't made of wood! And my nose has shrunk!
- Pinocchio 爸爸，快来看！我是一个真正的孩子了！
Bàba, kuài lái kàn! Wǒ shì yí gè zhēnzhèng de háizi le!
Papa, come and look! I'm a real boy!
- Geppetto 匹诺曹，我的孩子！你真的变成真正的孩子了！
Pǐnuòcáo, wǒ de háizi! Nǐ zhēn de biànchéng zhēnzhèng de háizi le!
Pinocchio, my boy! You really have become a real boy!
- Pinocchio 我的口袋里……有金币！是仙女给的！爸爸，我给你买一件新大衣吧！
Wǒ de kǒudai lǐ… yǒu jīnbì! Shì xiānnǚ gěi de! Bàba, wǒ gěi nǐ mǎi yí jiàn xīn dàyī ba!
In my pocket... there are gold coins! They're from the fairy! Papa, let me buy you a new coat!
- Geppetto 新大衣？好啊……这一次，我不会说它太热了！
Xīn dàyī? Hǎo a… Zhè yí cì, wǒ bú huì shuō tā tài rè le!
A new coat? Yes, please... And this time, I won't say it's too warm!
- Pinocchio 爸爸你看，椅子上那个旧木偶！以前的我，多好笑啊！现在的我，多高兴啊！
Bàba nǐ kàn, yǐzi shang nàge jiù mù'ǒu! Yǐqián de wǒ, duō hǎoxiào a! Xiànzài de wǒ, duō gāoxìng a!
