爸爸的大衣
A hungry night, a painted pot, and two burned-off feet. Then Geppetto comes home, and Pinocchio learns what one school book can cost.

That night was dark and cold. Pinocchio was home alone, and he was very, very hungry.
- Pinocchio 好饿啊……那边有一个锅！里面一定有好吃的！
Hǎo è a… Nà biān yǒu yí gè guō! Lǐmiàn yídìng yǒu hǎochī de!
I'm so hungry... There's a pot over there! There must be something yummy inside!
- Pinocchio 哎哟，我的鼻子！这个锅……是画在墙上的！
Āiyō, wǒ de bízi! Zhège guō… shì huà zài qiáng shang de!
Ow, my nose! This pot... it's painted on the wall!

Hungry and worn out, Pinocchio put his feet up on the little stove and fell asleep.
- Geppetto 匹诺曹！快开门！警察放我回来了！
Pǐnuòcáo! Kuài kāi mén! Jǐngchá fàng wǒ huílái le!
Pinocchio! Open the door! The police have let me go!
- Pinocchio 来了，来了……啊？我的脚呢？
Lái le, lái le… A? Wǒ de jiǎo ne?
Coming, coming... Huh? Where are my feet?
- Pinocchio 爸爸，我的木头脚都烧没了！我开不了门！
Bàba, wǒ de mùtou jiǎo dōu shāo méi le! Wǒ kāi bù liǎo mén!
Papa, my wooden feet got burned up! I can't open the door!
- Narrator 杰佩托从窗户爬了进来。他看见匹诺曹没有脚，又生气，又难过。
Jiépèituō cóng chuānghu pá le jìnlái. Tā kànjiàn Pǐnuòcáo méiyǒu jiǎo, yòu shēngqì, yòu nánguò.
Geppetto climbed in through the window. When he saw Pinocchio with no feet, he was angry and sad at the same time.
- Pinocchio 爸爸，我好饿！我一天没吃东西了！
Bàba, wǒ hǎo è! Wǒ yì tiān méi chī dōngxi le!
Papa, I'm so hungry! I haven't eaten all day!
- Geppetto 我只有三个梨，是我的早饭。好吧，都给你。
Wǒ zhǐ yǒu sān gè lí, shì wǒ de zǎofàn. Hǎo ba, dōu gěi nǐ.
All I have is three pears, and they're my breakfast. Oh, all right. They're all yours.
- Pinocchio 有皮的梨，我不吃！爸爸，你把皮拿掉！
Yǒu pí de lí, wǒ bù chī! Bàba, nǐ bǎ pí ná diào!
I don't eat pears with the skin on! Papa, take the skin off!
- Narrator 杰佩托把皮拿掉了。匹诺曹吃完了梨，又看了看桌子上的梨皮。
Jiépèituō bǎ pí ná diào le. Pǐnuòcáo chī wán le lí, yòu kàn le kàn zhuōzi shang de lí pí.
Geppetto peeled the pears. Pinocchio gobbled them up, and then he eyed the peels on the table.
- Pinocchio 梨皮……其实也很好吃！
Lí pí… qíshí yě hěn hǎochī!
Pear peel... is actually pretty tasty too!
- Geppetto 你看，饿的时候，什么都好吃！
Nǐ kàn, è de shíhou, shénme dōu hǎochī!
You see? When you're hungry, everything tastes good!
- Pinocchio 爸爸，你再给我做一双脚吧！
Bàba, nǐ zài gěi wǒ zuò yì shuāng jiǎo ba!
Papa, please make me some new feet!
- Geppetto 好。可是你要去上学，你答应我吗？
Hǎo. Kěshì nǐ yào qù shàngxué, nǐ dāying wǒ ma?
All right. But you have to go to school. Do you promise?
- Pinocchio 我保证！我天天去上学！以后，我给你买很多好东西！
Wǒ bǎozhèng! Wǒ tiāntiān qù shàngxué! Yǐhòu, wǒ gěi nǐ mǎi hěn duō hǎo dōngxi!
I promise! I'll go to school every day! And someday I'll buy you lots of nice things!
- Narrator 杰佩托给他做了一双新脚，还用花纸给他做了一件新衣服。
Jiépèituō gěi tā zuò le yì shuāng xīn jiǎo, hái yòng huā zhǐ gěi tā zuò le yí jiàn xīn yīfu.
Geppetto made him a new pair of feet, and a little suit out of flowered paper, too.
- Pinocchio 爸爸，上学还要一本书。我们有书吗？
Bàba, shàngxué hái yào yì běn shū. Wǒmen yǒu shū ma?
Papa, for school I need a book too. Do we have a book?
- Geppetto 书……家里一分钱也没有……好，我有办法了！你在家等我。
Shū… jiā lǐ yì fēn qián yě méiyǒu… Hǎo, wǒ yǒu bànfǎ le! Nǐ zài jiā děng wǒ.
A book... and not a penny in the house... All right, I've got an idea! Wait here for me.
- Narrator 那天，外面下着大雪。杰佩托穿上他的旧大衣，走了出去。
Nà tiān, wàimiàn xiàzhe dà xuě. Jiépèituō chuān shang tā de jiù dàyī, zǒu le chūqù.
Heavy snow was falling that day. Geppetto put on his old coat and went out.
- Pinocchio 爸爸回来了！啊，一本新书！……爸爸，你的大衣呢？
Bàba huílái le! A, yì běn xīn shū! … Bàba, nǐ de dàyī ne?
Papa's back! Oh, a brand-new book! ...Papa, where's your coat?
- Geppetto 大衣？我卖了。
Dàyī? Wǒ mài le.
My coat? I sold it.
- Pinocchio 为什么卖了？外面在下雪啊！
Wèishénme mài le? Wàimiàn zài xià xuě a!
Why did you sell it? It's snowing outside!
- Geppetto 因为……穿着太热了。
Yīnwèi… chuānzhe tài rè le.
Because... it was much too warm.
- Pinocchio 爸爸……我明白了。你真好。
Bàba… wǒ míngbai le. Nǐ zhēn hǎo.
Papa... I understand. You're so good to me.
- Narrator 第二天早上，匹诺曹拿着新书，高高兴兴地去上学了。
Dì'èr tiān zǎoshang, Pǐnuòcáo názhe xīn shū, gāogāoxìngxìng de qù shàngxué le.
The next morning, Pinocchio set off happily for school with his new book.
- Pinocchio 今天学读书，明天学写字。以后有了钱，我给爸爸买一件金大衣！
Jīntiān xué dúshū, míngtiān xué xiě zì. Yǐhòu yǒu le qián, wǒ gěi bàba mǎi yí jiàn jīn dàyī!
Today I'll learn to read, tomorrow I'll learn to write. And when I've got money, I'll buy Papa a coat made of gold!
- Pinocchio 听！那边有音乐！还有很多人在笑！
Tīng! Nà biān yǒu yīnyuè! Hái yǒu hěn duō rén zài xiào!
Listen! There's music over there! And lots of people laughing!
- Pinocchio 学校在这边……音乐在那边……我去哪儿呢？
Xuéxiào zài zhè biān… yīnyuè zài nà biān… wǒ qù nǎr ne?
School is this way... the music is that way... Which way do I go?
