The Butterfly Man
捉蝴蝶的人
Watson meets a friendly butterfly hunter on the moor, and then a frightened woman who tells him to leave. Why is everyone so sure that a bird is making that awful cry?

The moor was quiet that morning, with only the wind. After breakfast, Watson went out for a walk alone.
- Dr. Watson 我要把这里的路都记下来。福尔摩斯一定想知道，我每天都看到了什么。

- Stapleton 喂！先生！请小心脚下！别再往前走了！
Wèi! Xiānsheng! Qǐng xiǎoxīn jiǎoxià! Bié zài wǎng qián zǒu le!
Hello there! Sir! Watch your step! Don't go any farther!
- Dr. Watson 你说什么？

- Stapleton 前面是大沼泽！一脚踩进去，人和马都会被吃掉，连声音都听不到。
Qiánmiàn shì dà zhǎozé! Yì jiǎo cǎi jìnqù, rén hé mǎ dōu huì bèi chīdiào, lián shēngyīn dōu tīng bú dào.
That's the great mire ahead! One step in and it swallows man and horse, and you can't even hear them.
- Dr. Watson 谢谢你，你救了我。请问你是……
Xièxie nǐ, nǐ jiù le wǒ. Qǐngwèn nǐ shì……
Thank you, you saved me. And you are...?
- Stapleton 我叫斯台普顿，就住在旁边。你看，这是我捉蝴蝶的网。可惜今天蝴蝶都不给我面子！
Wǒ jiào Sītáipǔdùn, jiù zhù zài pángbiān. Nǐ kàn, zhè shì wǒ zhuō húdié de wǎng. Kěxī jīntiān húdié dōu bù gěi wǒ miànzi!
I'm Stapleton, and I live nearby. See my butterfly net? Sadly, the butterflies won't do me any favors today!
- Dr. Watson 捉蝴蝶？这么冷的天，还有蝴蝶吗？
Zhuō húdié? Zhème lěng de tiān, háiyǒu húdié ma?
Catching butterflies? In this cold, are there any butterflies?
- Stapleton 有！荒野上的蝴蝶，比伦敦的漂亮得多。
Yǒu! Huāngyě shàng de húdié, bǐ Lúndūn de piàoliang de duō.
Yes! The butterflies on the moor are far prettier than London's.
- Dr. Watson 你怎么知道我是谁？

How do you know who I am?
- Stapleton 这里的消息传得很快。你是华生医生，是亨利爵士的朋友，昨天刚到庄园。
Zhèlǐ de xiāoxi chuán de hěnkuài. Nǐ shì Huáshēng yīshēng, shì Hēnglì juéshì de péngyou, zuótiān gāng dào zhuāngyuán.
News travels fast here. You're Dr. Watson, Sir Henry's friend, who just arrived at the hall yesterday.
- Dr. Watson 你对这里很熟悉。你在这里住了很久吗？
Nǐ duì zhèlǐ hěn shúxī. Nǐ zài zhèlǐ zhù le hěn jiǔ ma?
You know this place well. Have you lived here long?
- Stapleton 五年了。我和我妹妹从别的地方搬来，就爱上了这里的鸟和蝴蝶。
Wǔ nián le. Wǒ hé wǒ mèimei cóng biéde dìfang bān lái, jiù ài shàng le zhèlǐ de niǎo hé húdié.
Five years. My sister and I moved here from elsewhere and fell in love with the birds and butterflies.
- Stapleton 我爱这里。可是上个月，有一匹小马走进了沼泽。我们只听到它的叫声，然后就什么也没有了。
Wǒ ài zhèlǐ. Kěshì shàng gè yuè, yǒu yì pǐ xiǎomǎ zǒujìn le zhǎozé. Wǒmen zhǐ tīngdào tā de jiàoshēng, ránhòu jiù shénme yě méiyǒu le.
I love it here. But last month a pony wandered into the mire. We heard it cry out, and then there was nothing at all.
- Dr. Watson 太可怕了。

- Stapleton 所以晚上一定不要来这里。有时候，荒野上还会有一种很大的叫声。
Suǒyǐ wǎnshang yídìng bú yào lái zhèlǐ. Yǒushíhou, huāngyě shàng hái huì yǒu yì zhǒng hěn dà de jiàoshēng.
So never come here at night. Sometimes there is also a very loud cry out on the moor.
- Dr. Watson 那是什么？

- Stapleton 农民们说，那是巴斯克维尔家的猎犬。我想，是一种大鸟，叫起来很吓人。
Nóngmínmen shuō, nà shì Bāsīkèwéi'ěr jiā de lièquǎn. Wǒ xiǎng, shì yì zhǒng dà niǎo, jiào qǐlái hěn xiàrén.
The farmers say it's the Baskerville hound. I think it's some big bird with a frightening call.
- Dr. Watson 你相信猎犬的故事吗？
Nǐ xiāngxìn lièquǎn de gùshi ma?
Do you believe the story of the hound?
- Stapleton 当然不信！人在黑暗里害怕的时候，什么都会相信。
Dāngrán bú xìn! Rén zài hēi'àn lǐ hàipà de shíhou, shénme dōu huì xiāngxìn.
Of course not! When people are afraid in the dark, they'll believe anything.
- Dr. Watson 可是我昨晚听到的声音，不像是鸟。

But the sound I heard last night didn't seem like a bird.
- Stapleton 那是因为夜里，声音会变得很奇怪。

That's because at night, sounds turn strange.
- Beryl 请等一下！

Nǐ shì Hēnglì juéshì, duì bú duì? Qǐng tīng wǒ de huà, mǎshàng huí Lúndūn qù! Bú yào wèn wǒ wèishénme!
You're Sir Henry, aren't you? Listen to me and go back to London at once! Don't ask me why!
- Dr. Watson 您认错人了。我是亨利爵士的朋友，华生医生。
Nín rèncuò rén le. Wǒ shì Hēnglì juéshì de péngyou, Huáshēng yīshēng.
You've mistaken me. I'm Sir Henry's friend, Dr. Watson.

Huáshēng yīshēng? Duìbuqǐ…… wǒ yǐwéi nǐ shì Hēnglì juéshì. Qǐng wàng le wǒ gāngcái shuō de huà.
Dr. Watson? I'm sorry... I thought you were Sir Henry. Please forget what I just said.
- Stapleton 贝丽尔！你在这里做什么？
Bèilì'ěr! Nǐ zài zhèlǐ zuò shénme?
Beryl! What are you doing here?
- Beryl 没什么，哥哥。我只是和华生医生说了几句话。
Méi shénme, gēge. Wǒ zhǐshì hé Huáshēng yīshēng shuō le jǐ jù huà.
Nothing, brother. I was only saying a few words to Dr. Watson.
- Stapleton 华生医生，我妹妹总是这样，一见到陌生人，就会说奇怪的话。
Huáshēng yīshēng, wǒ mèimei zǒngshì zhèyàng, yí jiàndào mòshēngrén, jiù huì shuō qíguài de huà.
Dr. Watson, my sister is always like this. The moment she sees a stranger, she says odd things.
- Dr. Watson 没关系。时间不早了，我该回去了。
Méi guānxi. Shíjiān bù zǎo le, wǒ gāi huíqù le.
It doesn't matter. It's getting late, and I should get back.
- Stapleton 请代我问候亨利爵士。有空请你们来我家喝茶，我给你们看我的蝴蝶。
Qǐng dài wǒ wènhòu Hēnglì juéshì. Yǒukòng qǐng nǐmen lái wǒ jiā hē chá, wǒ gěi nǐmen kàn wǒ de húdié.
Give my regards to Sir Henry. Come to my house for tea sometime, and I'll show you my butterflies.
- Dr. Watson 她为什么这么害怕？她说的“回伦敦”，到底是什么意思？

Why was she so afraid? What did she mean by “go back to London”?

Qíguài, Sītáipǔdùn shuō nà jiàoshēng shì niǎo…… kěshì wǒ zuówǎn tīngdào de, shì yì tiáo dà gǒu.
Strange. Stapleton says the cry is a bird... but what I heard last night was a huge dog.
- Dr. Watson 那不是鸟。那声音，是从沼泽那边来的。他为什么要对我说谎？
Nà bú shì niǎo. Nà shēngyīn, shì cóng zhǎozé nàbiān lái de. Tā wèishénme yào duì wǒ shuōhuǎng?
That's not a bird. That sound came from the mire. Why would he lie to me?
