The Candle in the Window
窗前的蜡烛
At midnight Watson and Sir Henry catch the butler signaling with a candle to someone on the moor. Then they chase a shadow, and something terrible is waiting in the dark.

A week passed, and Watson wrote to Holmes every day. One night he heard strange footsteps in the hallway.
- Dr. Watson 亨利，快起来！有人在走廊里走来走去！
Hēnglì, kuài qǐlái! Yǒurén zài zǒuláng lǐ zǒu lái zǒu qù!
Henry, get up! Someone's walking around in the hallway!
- Sir Henry 谁？什么人？
Shuí? Shénme rén?
Who? Who is it?
- Dr. Watson 嘘！你看，他手里拿着一支蜡烛，正慢慢走向窗前。
Xū! Nǐ kàn, tā shǒulǐ ná zhe yì zhī làzhú, zhèng mànmàn zǒuxiàng chuāngqián.
Shh! Look, he's holding a candle and walking slowly toward the window.
- Sir Henry 是巴里摩尔！这么晚了，他一个人在做什么？
Shì Bālǐmó'ěr! Zhème wǎn le, tā yí gè rén zài zuò shénme?
It's Barrymore! What is he doing alone at this hour?
- Dr. Watson 他把蜡烛放在窗前，一动不动，好像在等什么人回答他。
Tā bǎ làzhú fàngzài chuāngqián, yí dòng bú dòng, hǎoxiàng zài děng shénme rén huídá tā.
He's put the candle at the window and stands perfectly still, as if waiting for someone to answer.
- Sir Henry 你看荒野上！那边有一个小小的黄色的光，也在一闪一闪！
Nǐ kàn huāngyě shàng! Nàbiān yǒu yí gè xiǎoxiǎo de huángsè de guāng, yě zài yì shǎn yì shǎn!
Look out on the moor! A small yellow light over there is flashing back!
- Dr. Watson 有人在回答他！走，我们下去问问他，到底是怎么回事！
Yǒurén zài huídá tā! Zǒu, wǒmen xiàqù wèn wèn tā, dàodǐ shì zěnme huí shì!
Someone is answering him! Come on, let's go down and ask him what's going on!
- Sir Henry 巴里摩尔！你半夜在这里做什么？
Bālǐmó'ěr! Nǐ bànyè zài zhèlǐ zuò shénme?
Barrymore! What are you doing here in the middle of the night?
- Barrymore 爵士！我……我在看月亮。今晚的月亮，真好看。

Sir! I... I was looking at the moon. It's a lovely moon tonight.
- Sir Henry 看月亮，需要蜡烛吗？

Does looking at the moon require a candle?
- Dr. Watson 我们都看见了，你不用骗我们。你是在给荒野上的人打信号。
Wǒmen dōu kànjiàn le, nǐ búyòng piàn wǒmen. Nǐ shì zài gěi huāngyě shàng de rén dǎ xìnhào.
We saw everything, so don't lie to us. You were signaling to someone on the moor.
- Barrymore 爵士，请不要告诉别人。荒野上的那个人，是我太太的弟弟，我们不能不管他。
Juéshì, qǐng bú yào gàosu biérén. Huāngyě shàng de nàge rén, shì wǒ tàitai de dìdi, wǒmen bù néng bùguǎn tā.
Sir, please don't tell anyone. The man on the moor is my wife's brother, and we couldn't just abandon him.
- Sir Henry 你太太的弟弟？他是谁？为什么躲在荒野上？
Nǐ tàitai de dìdi? Tā shì shuí? Wèishénme duǒ zài huāngyě shàng?
Your wife's brother? Who is he? Why is he hiding on the moor?
- Barrymore 他……就是那个逃犯，塞尔登。他做过错事，可是在我太太心里，他永远是她的小弟弟。
Tā…… jiùshì nàge táofàn, Sài'ěrdēng. Tā zuò guò cuò shì, kěshì zài wǒ tàitai xīnlǐ, tā yǒngyuǎn shì tā de xiǎo dìdi.
He... he is the convict, Selden. He has done wrong, but in my wife's heart he will always be her little brother.
- Barrymore 我太太一直很爱他，所以每天夜里都在偷偷地哭。
Wǒ tàitai yìzhí hěn ài tā, suǒyǐ měitiān yèlǐ dōu zài tōutōu de kū.
My wife has always loved him dearly, and that's why she cries in secret every night.
- Dr. Watson 原来那天晚上的哭声，是她！她一定难过极了。
Yuánlái nàtiān wǎnshang de kūshēng, shì tā! Tā yídìng nánguò jíle.
So that crying was her! She must be terribly sad.
- Barrymore 我们不想让他饿死，所以每天给他送吃的，还有您送给我的旧衣服。今晚是最后一次，他明天要坐船离开英国。

We didn't want him to starve, so we brought him food every day, and the old clothes you gave me. Tonight is the last time. He leaves England by ship tomorrow.
- Sir Henry 你们应该早点告诉我！

You should have told me sooner!
- Barrymore 对不起，爵士。他是我太太唯一的亲人，我们实在没有办法。
Duìbuqǐ, juéshì. Tā shì wǒ tàitai wéiyī de qīnrén, wǒmen shízài méiyǒu bànfǎ.
I'm sorry, sir. He is my wife's only family, and we truly had no choice.
- Dr. Watson 亨利，荒野的夜里太冷了。他一个人在外面，会生病的。

Henry, the moor is bitterly cold at night. Alone out there, he'll get sick.
- Sir Henry 好吧。可是我们不能让危险的犯人在外面乱跑。今晚就去找他，让他自己投降！
Hǎo ba. Kěshì wǒmen bù néng ràng wēixiǎn de fànrén zài wàimiàn luànpǎo. Jīnwǎn jiù qù zhǎo tā, ràng tā zìjǐ tóuxiáng!
All right. But we can't let a dangerous convict run loose. We'll go find him tonight and make him give himself up!

They walked out into the dark moor. The moon was big and white, and there was no one around.
- Dr. Watson 亨利，你看，那边有一个人影，就在石头后面！

Henry, look, there's a figure over there, right behind the rocks!

Stop! Selden! Don't run any more, we won't hurt you!
- Dr. Watson 他往石头上跑了！追！

He's running up the rocks! After him!
- Sir Henry 华生，你听！
Huáshēng, nǐ tīng!
Watson, listen!
- Dr. Watson 那声音又长又低……好像不是从天上来的，是从地下传来的。
Nà shēngyīn yòu zhǎng yòu dī…… hǎoxiàng bú shì cóng tiānshàng lái de, shì cóng dìxià chuánlái de.
That sound, long and low... it doesn't seem to come from the sky, but from under the ground.
- Sir Henry 它离我们很近！这边！
Tā lí wǒmen hěn jìn! Zhèbiān!
It's very close! This way!
- Dr. Watson 有一个人躺在石头下面……天哪，是塞尔登！
Yǒu yí gè rén tǎng zài shítou xiàmiàn…… tiān nǎ, shì Sài'ěrdēng!
A man is lying below the rocks... Good Lord, it's Selden!
- Sir Henry 他……他一动也不动。
Tā…… tā yí dòng yě bú dòng.
He... he isn't moving at all.
- Dr. Watson 亨利，你看他穿的衣服！那是你送给巴里摩尔的旧外衣，我认得它！
Hēnglì, nǐ kàn tā chuān de yīfu! Nà shì nǐ sònggěi Bālǐmó'ěr de jiù wàiyī, wǒ rènde tā!
Henry, look at his clothes! That's the old coat you gave Barrymore. I recognize it!
- Sir Henry 我的旧外衣……
Wǒ de jiù wàiyī……
My old coat...
- Dr. Watson 猎犬闻到了那件外衣上的味道，所以才追着他跑。
Lièquǎn wéndào le nà jiàn wàiyī shàng de wèidao, suǒyǐ cái zhuī zhe tā pǎo.
The hound caught the scent on that coat, and that's why it chased him.
- Sir Henry 它要找的人……不是他，是我！
Tā yào zhǎo de rén…… bú shì tā, shì wǒ!
The one it was looking for... wasn't him. It was me!
