HSK 4 Health & Medical Words: Trace and Write

Ten words carry an HSK 4 conversation about health: 健康, 生病, 医院, 医生, 护士, 药, 检查, 感冒, 压力 and 锻炼. Each appears with pinyin above a row of 田字格 (tián zì gé) grids, guided strokes first and blank boxes after.

锻炼 comes from the forge

Both characters in 锻炼 (duàn liàn) carry 钅, the metal radical: 锻 is to forge and 炼 is to smelt or refine. The word for physical training is literally hammering and tempering metal, which is also why it works figuratively for toughening a person up. 检查 (jiǎn chá) is built from two characters containing 木, and it does double duty — a medical check-up, and any inspection at all, from luggage to homework.

Morphemes you will meet again

医 covers 医院 and 医生, and the 院 of 医院 is the same institution word you find in 学院 and 法院. 护士 shares its 护 with 护照: protecting a patient, protecting a traveler. 士 marks a trained specialist, as it does in 博士. 压力 deserves a pause, because HSK 4 is where vocabulary turns abstract — it is physical pressure and psychological stress in one word, and it takes 大 rather than 多, as in 压力很大.

Trace each guided row, cover the model, and write the word from memory. Say it aloud while you go; medical vocabulary is worth having in the mouth as well as the hand. Frequently asked questions

Which ten words are on the HSK 4 health sheet?

健康, 生病, 医院, 医生, 护士, 药, 检查, 感冒, 压力 and 锻炼. The set covers being well, falling ill, the people and place that treat you, and the two words — 压力 and 锻炼 — that carry most talk about lifestyle at this level.

Why do 锻 and 炼 both use the metal radical?

Because the word began at a forge. 锻 is to hammer metal into shape and 炼 is to smelt or refine it, and 钅 is the compressed form of 金. Applied to a body, 锻炼 means training, and the metaphor of tempering is still visible in both characters.

Does 检查 only mean a medical check-up?

No. It covers examination and inspection generally: a doctor 检查 a patient, customs 检查 your bag, and a teacher 检查 the homework. Context supplies the setting, so treat it as a general-purpose verb that happens to be common in clinics.

Is 压力 used for stress or for pressure?

Both, in one word. It is the physical pressure of a force and the psychological stress of a workload, with no separate term for each. The usual collocation takes 大, so heavy stress is 压力很大 rather than anything built on 多.
