Connecting words decide how a Chinese sentence holds together, and HSK 6 reading passages use them constantly. 除非 (chúfēi, unless) and 即便 (jíbiàn, even if) set conditions, 足以 (zúyǐ, enough to) says something is sufficient, and 以免 (yǐmiǎn, so as to avoid) and 以便 (yǐbiàn, so that) explain purpose. 之所以 (zhīsuǒyǐ, the reason why) opens a sentence that goes on to give a cause.
