HelloTalk review: is it safe, and is it worth it for learning Chinese?
Our HelloTalk review for Mandarin learners: Chinese partners, safety, VIP prices, the pinyin, translation and AI tools, and 500 recent App Store reviews.

HelloTalk can connect you with native Mandarin speakers for free, often on your first day. Yet its 500 latest written App Store reviews average 2.2 stars.
This review is for you if you're learning Mandarin and wondering whether HelloTalk is worth your time, safe to use, or worth paying for. We read its store listings, its help center, its terms and privacy policy, and every one of its 500 latest App Store reviews.
Key takeaways
- Native Chinese speakers are easy to find. HelloTalk says it has 70 million users, and many Chinese members are there to learn English.
- The chat tools suit Chinese. One tap turns characters into pinyin or English, and partners can correct your sentences inside the chat.
- It won't teach you Chinese. The core app has no course path or HSK levels, and your partners are volunteers, not teachers.
- Recent reviews are harsh. Paywalls, bugs and bans lead the complaints, though one review in five praises the people.
- Safety takes work, especially for women. Unwanted flirting is a common complaint, and searching for partners by gender is a paid feature.
- The free plan is enough to start. Its daily caps on translations and new partners are the main reason to pay.
Great for talking, no help with learning
HelloTalk does one job well: it connects you with people who speak Mandarin and want to practise your language. Everything a course does, it leaves to you. We read its listings, its help center and its latest reviews, then scored each part:

If you already study Chinese with a course or a teacher, HelloTalk is a cheap way to use it with real people. If you're hoping an app will teach you, it won't.
A social network built for language exchange
HelloTalk is a messaging app and a social feed in one, sorted by the language you speak and the one you learn. It launched in 2012, and its About page now claims more than 70 million users in 200-plus countries.
You'll spend your time in five places:
- Chats, one-to-one, by text, voice message, voice call or video call.
- Connect, where you browse partners whose native language is the one you're learning.
- Moments, a public feed where you post and native speakers correct you.
- Voicerooms, live group audio rooms, some of them themed and some just chatting.
- Live, livestreams by hosts, where viewers can send paid gifts.
The app also sells extras. Its own App Store image puts Courses, HelloWords vocabulary games and AI Grammar right at the top of your chats:

Those extras are separate purchases. HelloTalk's help center says courses and HelloWords need their own subscriptions, and its one-to-one LiveClass tutoring is another product again. We couldn't see inside the courses without an account, so we leave them out of our verdict.
For Mandarin learners, the pool matters most, and it's large. HelloTalk's Chinese website is registered to a Shenzhen company, and on China's App Store it has 92,768 ratings, twice as many as in the US. Its Chinese listing pitches English practice for exams like IELTS and TOEFL, and its title promises you'll make friends with foreigners, 和外国人交友.
That's good news if you speak English: plenty of native Mandarin speakers want exactly what you have to offer.
Finding Chinese partners is easy; keeping them is harder
You'll get messages fast. As an English speaker learning Chinese, you're in demand, and the Connect tab fills with mainland Chinese speakers learning English. When we looked, HelloTalk's own web directory of Chinese partners showed 24 sample profiles, 23 of them in mainland China.
The free plan caps how many new people you can message. HelloTalk's help center says free members can contact 10 new partners a day, and VIP members 25.
Keeping a partner is the hard part. In our count of recent App Store reviews, 41 struggled to find the right partners: people stopped replying, answered in one word or didn't speak the language they wanted. HelloTalk's own advice for "why does nobody reply" is to post Moments about language and culture and to fill in your profile.
We'd make the first message do more work. A profile that says what you want, and what you can give back, helps the right partners find you. Here's a short self-introduction you can adapt, English first:
- Hi! I'm Sam, from the US. 你好!我叫 Sam,我是美国人。 Nǐ hǎo! Wǒ jiào Sam, wǒ shì Měiguórén.
- I'm learning Chinese and looking for a language partner. 我在学中文,想找语言伙伴。 Wǒ zài xué Zhōngwén, xiǎng zhǎo yǔyán huǒbàn.
- I can help you practise English. 我可以帮你练英语。 Wǒ kěyǐ bāng nǐ liàn Yīngyǔ.
- Corrections welcome! 欢迎纠正我的中文! Huānyíng jiūzhèng wǒ de Zhōngwén!
Leave out your city, your workplace and your other social accounts. You can share more once you know someone.
One more habit helps. Agree on a split up front, such as 15 minutes in Chinese and then 15 in English, because exchanges drift into English when one side is stronger. HelloTalk's Language Exchange call does this for you, with timed calls of 10 to 30 minutes and turns for each language.
The chat tools are a real help with Chinese
HelloTalk's tools are built into every message, and for Chinese they do a lot. Long-press a message, and you can translate it, transliterate it, turn a voice message into text or correct it:

Here's what each one does for a Mandarin learner:
- Transliteration writes a Chinese message out in pinyin, so you can read it aloud before you know the characters.
- Translation shows the message in English. HelloTalk says it uses several machine-translation engines, Google Translate among them, and warns the results may not be accurate.
- Voice to text transcribes a partner's voice message into characters, which you can then translate or transliterate.
- Correction lets a partner edit your sentence and send it back, with the changes marked.
- AI Grammar suggests fixes on its own, without waiting for a partner.
The free plan rations most of this. Free members get 10 translations a day, and HelloTalk's blog says AI correction and voice to text have daily caps too. VIP removes them.
Two caveats. Corrections come from volunteers, and one reviewer gave up on Moments after finding English corrections that were unnecessary or plain wrong. And machine translation can lose nuance; one Japanese learner now pastes messages into ChatGPT instead.
Our advice: translate only what you can't work out. Every message you puzzle through yourself teaches you more than ten you tap.
Partners can correct your tones; the app can't
HelloTalk gives you plenty of ways to speak, and they're mostly free. Voice and video calls are free with no time limit, and free members get 90 minutes a day in Voicerooms, the group audio rooms:

What it doesn't give you is reliable feedback on your tones. HelloTalk's blog mentions AI pronunciation scoring, but none of its pages says the app checks Mandarin tones, and its help center doesn't describe the feature. Feedback depends on a partner noticing, caring and explaining.
That gap matters more in Chinese than in most languages. Say "to buy", 买, with a falling tone, and you've said "to sell", 卖. A friendly partner may simply guess what you meant and carry on.
You can't lean on voice to text either. Speech recognition picks the likeliest words, so context can hide a slip. A review of 15 studies of English learners found speech-recognition practice helped their individual sounds far more than their rhythm and pitch.
So ask for tone feedback directly. These requests work in any chat:
- Could you correct my tones? 你可以纠正我的声调吗? Nǐ kěyǐ jiūzhèng wǒ de shēngdiào ma?
- Could you record that sentence for me? 你可以录一下这句话吗? Nǐ kěyǐ lù yíxià zhè jù huà ma?
- Please say it again. 请再说一遍。 Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn.
- A little slower, please. 请慢一点。 Qǐng màn yìdiǎn.
HelloTalk's own blog suggests a simple routine, and we'd use it. You send a short voice message, your partner records the same sentence back, and you copy it until it matches.
Is HelloTalk safe?
Mostly yes, if you treat it like any app full of strangers: keep personal details back, keep chats in the app, and block fast. But unwanted flirting is common, and women describe the worst of it.
HelloTalk is clear about the rules. Its safety page says it is not a dating app, and that seeking romance or sexual chat breaks them. It lists the scam signs too: requests for money, investment offers, and links or IDs for other apps.
The reviews tell a messier story. In our count, 68 of the 500 latest App Store reviews complained of unwanted flirting, dating pressure, sexual messages or harassment. Seven of those were written by women or about women's experience, and 12 more described unwanted messages or advances from men.
"This app does NOTHING to protect women from harassment." App Store review, April 2026
The app's design puts looks first. HelloTalk's own App Store image of the Connect tab leads with a large photo, with the partner's gender and age on the card:

Not every woman's experience is bad. One older woman wrote that she uses the block button to filter out creeps, and that reporting works. HelloTalk told a Google Play reviewer in June that it reviews reports of suspicious accounts within 48 hours.
HelloTalk does give you real controls. We went through its 434 help-center answers for every safety setting, and noted which are free:
| Setting | What it does | Free or VIP |
|---|---|---|
| Hide age, location or online status | Takes them off your profile, though fewer people will find you | Free |
| Exact Language Match | Only people whose languages match yours can find you | Free |
| Age range | Limits the ages of people who can message you | Free |
| Block Unknown Chat | Stops strangers' messages, unless they pay for a gift | Free |
| Report and block | Up to 10 people a day | Free |
| Search partners by gender | Lets you look for, say, women only | VIP |
| Hide my visits | Your visits to profiles stop showing up | VIP |
Source: HelloTalk's help center, read 5 November 2026. "Free" means the help center doesn't mark it as a VIP feature. Your local time always shows on your profile and can't be hidden.
The gender search sits behind the paywall, even though HelloTalk's privacy policy calls same-gender partners "a core feature". We think that's the wrong place for it. A few more rules of thumb:
- Keep chats in HelloTalk at first. Photos, links and calls unlock only after a few text messages, which slows strangers down.
- Never send money or crypto. Romance and investment scams start with a friendly partner and end with a request.
- Check the web-profile setting. When it's on, anyone with your link can see your photo, self-introduction and latest posts in a browser.
- Report, then block. A block stops someone messaging you, but HelloTalk only acts on a report, with your chat attached as evidence.
If you're under 18, HelloTalk says you can only find and see other under-18s. Its terms also ask for a parent's permission.
Talk politics, and you risk a ban
Bans are the third most common complaint in recent reviews. In our count, 80 of the 500 reviewers said HelloTalk had warned, restricted, suspended or deleted their account. At least 18 of them had paid for VIP or other extras.
"I was AI banned from a misunderstanding." App Store review, October 2026
HelloTalk's rules explain part of it. Its help center lists politics and religion among the reasons an account can be reported, next to dating, explicit content and asking for money. The usual path is a warning, then a suspension, then removal.
Bans can also hit your device, so a new account won't help. Reviewers describe mass reports from people who disliked them, and appeals that ask for a video selfie.
Moderation is partly automatic. HelloTalk says AI scans every Moments post, and a post with a selfie may be shown to your followers only. Its livestream rules, printed right on an App Store image, ban comments on politics:

For Mandarin learners, Taiwan is the sharpest edge. When we checked on 5 November, HelloTalk's language-exchange app wasn't listed on Apple's App Store in Taiwan, though Tandem and HelloChinese both were. Only a small English-practice app from a developer called HelloTalk Limited showed up there. Three reviewers report that Taiwan's flag has disappeared from profiles.
HelloTalk's terms are governed by Hong Kong law, and its Chinese website is registered to a Shenzhen company. Its privacy policy cites real-name rules for requiring your phone number.
What this means for you: steer clear of politics, religion and cross-strait questions in public spaces, and note your best partners' HelloTalk IDs so you can find them again. If you're learning Traditional characters for Taiwan, look at our guide to Simplified vs Traditional Chinese and consider Tandem for partners there.
Learners' verdict: 4.6 stars overall, 2.2 lately
HelloTalk's store ratings look good until you read the reviews. Its overall App Store average is 4.6, but the people who wrote reviews in the last 20 months are far less happy:
Source: HelloTalk's App Store and Google Play listings, and Apple's public feed of its US reviews, read 5 November 2026. The feed holds only reviews with text; the averages count every rating since launch.
Read the gap with care. People who write reviews are often unhappy, so the sample leans negative. Still, the same complaints come back month after month.
To see what they're about, we read all 500 reviews and noted every theme each one raises:
Source: our reading of the 500 most recent written reviews on the US App Store, 26 February 2025 to 3 November 2026. How we coded them is under Methods.
The praise is real, and it's about people. Reviewers describe close friends, patient partners and, for two of them, a spouse. One user since 2016, banned from livestreams last year, still wrote:
"I owe most of my Chinese language ability to this app." App Store review, May 2026
The three reviews Google Play shows first, from June to September 2026, match these themes: an app grown money-minded, glitches that ended with a reinstall wiping one user's friends, and a fake doctor asking for money.
The bug complaints have a simple cause you can avoid. HelloTalk keeps your chat history on your phone, not on its servers, so reinstalling the app or switching phones without a backup loses your chats.
Is HelloTalk free, and is VIP worth it?
Yes, HelloTalk is free, and the free plan covers the part that matters: chatting and calling native speakers. VIP lifts the daily caps, removes ads and unlocks extra search filters. Here's what the free plan limits:
| Feature | Free | VIP |
|---|---|---|
| Translations | 10 a day | Unlimited |
| New partners you can message | 10 a day | 25 a day |
| Languages you learn | 1, changed once every two days | Up to 3, changed any time |
| Voicerooms | 90 minutes a day | Unlimited |
| Search by gender, city or nearby | No | Yes |
| Captions in Voicerooms and livestreams | No | Yes |
| Ads | Yes | No |
Source: HelloTalk's help center and its VIP benefits list, read 5 November 2026.
On the US App Store, VIP costs $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year. A lifetime plan exists too, but the App Store's list of in-app purchases doesn't show it. StackSocial sells it to new US users for $119.99, against a suggested price of $199.99.
Paying for a year roughly halves the cost, by our sums:
Source: HelloTalk's US App Store listing and StackSocial's HelloTalk VIP page, 5 November 2026. Google Play doesn't list prices on the web; its in-app items run from $0.49 to $399.99.
At its suggested price, lifetime costs as much as two and a half years paid yearly, so it only wins if you stay past two years. At the sale price, it wins once you start a second year. We'd start with a month and see whether you hit the caps.
Watch the trial. HelloTalk's help center says free VIP trials go out at random, to some countries only, and usually last three days. If you've had one before on the same Apple or Google account, there's no second trial.
In our count, six reviewers said they accepted a "3-day trial" and were charged for a full year at once. Two of them were returning users. Check what the payment sheet says before you confirm.
Refunds go through Apple or Google. HelloTalk's help center calls its in-app purchases non-refundable, though its terms say it will review refund requests made on Google Play. Cancelling only stops the next renewal.
So is VIP worth it? For most Mandarin learners, not at first. Pay only if you keep running out of translations, want to search for partners by gender, or spend hours in Voicerooms.
HelloTalk's AI features are thinly documented
HelloTalk has been adding AI all over the app, but its help pages say little about it. Here's what we could confirm:
- AI Grammar suggests corrections in your chats. It's capped on the free plan and bundled into HelloTalk's paid Language Pass.
- AI translation runs on several engines, Google Translate among them.
- An AI assistant answers help questions in the app, such as how to change your birthday.
- AI chat partners appear in reviews, and the privacy policy describes AI conversation services, one of them for spoken English.
- AI moderation scans posts, and reviewers blame it for some bans.
We found no HelloTalk page saying whether its AI chat partners speak Chinese, how long they talk, or what they cost. One reviewer on a yearly plan said an AI chat stopped after about five sentences and asked for more money.
HelloTalk's dedicated AI tutor is a separate app. Talksy, from the same company, holds spoken conversations in 22 languages, Simplified Chinese among them. On the US App Store, Talksy Pro costs $40.49 a month, about three times HelloTalk VIP.
Two things are worth knowing before you use any of it. HelloTalk's terms say its AI features come from third-party partners and may be wrong. And its privacy policy allows de-identified chats with its AI to train its models, unless you write to opt out.
Reviewers are split. Some find the AI pushy and hard to switch off; one praised it for being optional.
If an AI conversation partner is what you want, our comparison of the best AI apps for Chinese covers apps built for it.
Who should use HelloTalk
We'd pick HelloTalk if:
- You already study Chinese. It's a place to use what a course or teacher gave you, with real people.
- You can write simple sentences. Pinyin and translation help, but chats go further once you have some vocabulary.
- You want free speaking time. Calls are free and unlimited, which no tutor can match.
- You speak English. You're in demand, so finding partners is easy.
We'd skip it, or pair it with something else, if:
- You're a total beginner. Without a course, you'll lean on translation and learn little.
- You want tone feedback. Partners may not give it, and HelloTalk describes no tone check of its own.
- You're preparing for the HSK. Nothing in the core app follows HSK levels, so add practice tests.
- You don't want strangers in your messages. Even with every setting on, you'll get some.
The best alternatives for each goal
No single app does everything. If HelloTalk isn't the right fit, here's what we'd pick for each goal:
A language exchange with vetting
- Pick
Tandem- Price
- Free; Pro is optional
- Why
- It says it reviews every application, and it's on Taiwan's App Store
A trained ear for your tones
- Pick
An italki tutor- Price
- About $20 an hour
- Why
- A teacher can hear your tones and explain them
Speaking practice without a stranger
- Pick
SayMei- Price
- $5.99 a month for 200 minutes
- Why
- Mei Lin replies out loud and corrects your tones
A course that teaches you
- Pick
HelloChinese- Price
- $69.99 a year
- Why
- Lessons from zero to about HSK 4
Free chats with native speakers
- Pick
HelloTalk- Price
- Free
- Why
- A huge pool of mainland Mandarin speakers
Source: each company's US App Store listing or website, 5 November 2026; italki's median price for Chinese teachers from our tutors guide.
For more on paying for a human teacher, read italki vs Preply for Chinese. For a structured course, our HelloChinese review covers its plans, and our best apps to learn Chinese picks one app for each goal.
Where SayMei fits, and where it doesn't
SayMei is our app, and it's built for speaking practice without a stranger. In a lesson, Mei Lin, your AI teacher, asks you questions out loud at your HSK level and corrects your tones and grammar as you answer.
Nobody can flirt with you or ask for your WhatsApp, because there's no one else in the conversation. SayMei Premium is $5.99 a month for 200 minutes with her.
We'll be plain about where SayMei loses:
- No real people. You won't make a friend in Chengdu or learn the slang a 25-year-old uses.
- Not free. HelloTalk's calls cost nothing, while SayMei Premium is capped at 200 minutes a month.
- Browser only. SayMei has no app and no offline mode.
- No culture swap. You can't teach English in return, and that exchange is half of HelloTalk's appeal.
Many learners would do best with both: SayMei to rehearse and fix your tones, then HelloTalk to use them on real people.
What to do next
- Start on the free plan. A week of chats will show you whether the partners suit you.
- Write a clear profile. Say what you're learning, what you can teach, and that corrections are welcome.
- Set your privacy first. Hide what you don't want strangers to see before you post a photo.
- Ask for tone corrections. Request a recording of the corrected sentence, and copy it.
- Keep politics out of public posts. It's the quickest way to lose an account you've built.
If you're planning how to fit speaking practice into your week, read our guide on how to speak Chinese.
FAQ
Is HelloTalk good for learning Chinese?
For practice, yes; for learning from scratch, no. HelloTalk connects you with native Mandarin speakers, mostly in mainland China, and its pinyin, translation and correction tools work well for Chinese.
But its core app doesn't teach a course, follow HSK levels or check your tones. It works best once you can write simple sentences, alongside a course or a teacher.
Is HelloTalk safe for women?
Mostly, with care. HelloTalk bans dating and gives you blocking, reporting and privacy settings. But unwanted flirting is among the most common complaints in its recent App Store reviews, and several come from women.
Searching for partners by gender is a VIP feature. Hide your location, keep chats in the app, and block anyone who pushes for photos or other accounts.
Is HelloTalk a dating app?
No, by its own rules. HelloTalk's safety page says it's for language learning and cultural exchange, and that seeking romance or sexual chat isn't allowed. Accounts reported for it can be warned, suspended or removed.
In practice, many users treat it as one. In our count of 500 recent App Store reviews, 68 complained of flirting or harassment, and 11 five-star reviews were about romance or dating.
How much does HelloTalk VIP cost?
On the US App Store, VIP costs $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year, checked 5 November 2026. A lifetime plan exists, but the App Store doesn't list its price; StackSocial sells it to new US users for $119.99.
Prices vary by country. Free trials of about three days appear at random, and only once per account.
Can you use HelloTalk on a computer?
Partly. HelloTalk's web version, at web.hellotalk.net, handles chats only: you log in by scanning a QR code with the phone app, and Moments and other features stay on your phone.
The iPhone app also runs on Macs with an Apple M1 chip or later. HelloTalk's download page lists iOS, Android and the web, with no Windows app.
Why do HelloTalk accounts get banned?
Usually after reports. HelloTalk's help center lists dating, explicit content, asking for money, advertising, politics, religion, offensive language and racism as reasons. The usual path is a warning, a suspension, then removal.
Bans can cover your device too. In our count, 80 of 500 recent App Store reviewers said they'd been warned, suspended or banned, many saying they didn't know why.
HelloTalk or Tandem: which is better for Chinese?
HelloTalk, if you want a huge pool of mainland Mandarin speakers and pinyin and translation built into every chat. Tandem, if you'd rather join a community that says it reviews every application, or you want partners in Taiwan.
Both are popular in China: on its App Store, HelloTalk has about 93,000 ratings and Tandem about 63,000. Both are free, with optional paid plans.
Does HelloTalk use AI?
Yes, in several places. AI Grammar suggests corrections, AI translation runs on several engines including Google Translate, and AI moderation scans posts. Reviewers also describe AI chat partners, though HelloTalk's help pages don't say which languages they speak.
HelloTalk's dedicated AI tutor is a separate app, Talksy, which covers Simplified Chinese and costs $40.49 a month on the US App Store.

Methods
We read HelloTalk's App Store and Google Play listings, help center, website, blog, terms and privacy policy on 5 November 2026. We didn't create an account, take part in chats or buy anything, so a feature is either what HelloTalk says or what its users report, and we say which.
- The review count covers the 500 most recent written reviews in Apple's public feed for the US App Store, from 26 February 2025 to 3 November 2026. We read every review and noted each theme it raised, so a review can count toward several themes. The coding is our judgment, not Apple's.
- Women's experience was counted only when a reviewer said she was a woman, or wrote about what women on the app receive. Twelve more reviewers described unwanted messages from men without saying their own gender; we report them separately.
- The ratings exhibit uses the averages Apple and Google show, which count every rating since launch, including ratings left without a review.
- Prices are US prices. Other countries, sales and HelloTalk's own offers can differ.
- The Taiwan check looked up HelloTalk, Tandem and HelloChinese in Apple's Taiwan storefront on 5 November 2026, and searched that storefront for HelloTalk.
- The scorecard is our judgment from these sources, not a test of the app.
- The screenshots are HelloTalk's own App Store images, shown unedited for review.
- The Mandarin examples were checked against the CC-CEDICT dictionary.
