Chinese Birthday Words Worksheet

祝你生日快乐 — I wish you a happy birthday — is worth being able to write, not just say. This free printable worksheet covers the ten words behind it: 生日, 快乐, 开心, 祝, 蛋糕, 蜡烛, 礼物, 岁, 聚会 and 许愿, each in 田字格 (tián zì gé) tracing grids with pinyin above. Print it or save the PDF, no signup needed.

How a wish is built

祝 is the verb that opens almost every greeting in Chinese, and it takes the person first and the wish second: 祝你生日快乐, 祝你健康. It is not interchangeable with 快乐 on its own — 快乐 is the wish itself. Keep 快乐 and 开心 apart while you are at it: 生日快乐 is fixed and you cannot swap in 开心, but 开心 is the everyday word for feeling cheerful or having a good time, as in 今天玩得很开心.

The radical that trips people up

祝 and 礼物 both begin with 礻, a squeezed form of 示 that marks words about ritual, blessing and ceremony — you meet it again in 福 and 神. Its lookalike is 衤, the clothing radical with an extra dot, which turns up in 衬衫. One dot separates a blessing from a shirt, so slow down on that first stroke group. One grammar note for the card as well: 岁 needs no verb. You write 我二十岁 or ask 你几岁, never 我是二十岁.

The full word table with pinyin and meanings is below. Trace each word, then write it from memory before you copy it onto a real card. Frequently asked questions

Is this worksheet free to download as a PDF?

Yes. The Birthdays & Celebrations worksheet is free to print or save as a PDF, with no account or email needed. Press Print / Download PDF: on a computer the PDF opens ready to print or save, and on a phone it goes to your share sheet. A4 or US Letter follows your country.

What level is this worksheet?

It suits learners from about HSK 3. That is an editorial estimate for the Birthdays & Celebrations topic, not an official HSK word list, so a few of its 10 words may be harder. Each word prints with tone-marked pinyin and an English meaning to help.

Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like — it's free. For a class set, press Change the words and open More options to add an answer key, a class line or a dictation page; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Test turns the sheet into a quiz.

Can I change the words or use traditional characters?

Yes. Press Change the words to open this sheet in the generator, then add, remove or replace words, up to 20 per sheet. Set Characters to Traditional to switch the whole sheet to traditional characters; a word with no verified traditional form stays as you typed it.

How should I practice with this worksheet?

Trace the gray guides first, saying each word aloud, then cover the model and write the characters from memory in the blank boxes. Scan the sheet's QR code or open the Practice tab to watch each stroke animate, trace it, then recall it without a guide. Revisit missed words a day or two later.
