Chinese Clothes Worksheet

This free printable page covers ten garments plus the two verbs that put them on. You will trace 衣服 (yī fu, clothes), 裤子 (kù zi, trousers), 裙子 (qún zi, skirt), 外套 (wài tào, coat), 毛衣 (máo yī, sweater), 鞋 (xié, shoes), 袜子 (wà zi, socks), 帽子 (mào zi, hat), 围巾 (wéi jīn, scarf) and 手套 (shǒu tào, gloves), each one printed above 田字格 (tián zì gé) grids with pinyin.

穿 or 戴

Mandarin sorts clothing by how it goes on. 穿 (chuān) is for anything your body passes through — trousers, a skirt, a coat, shoes and socks. 戴 (dài) is for what you fasten on top: 戴帽子, 戴手套, 戴围巾, and 戴眼镜 for glasses. Saying 穿帽子 is the classic slip, and it sounds as odd as "threading on a hat" does in English. Both verbs appear on the worksheet so your hand learns them next to the nouns they govern.

Two radicals in the wardrobe

Trace 裤子, 裙子 and 袜子 and watch the left edge: all three carry 衤, the compressed form of 衣, which files a character under clothing. 帽子 uses 巾 instead, the cloth component, and 巾 is also the whole right half of 围巾. Measure words split along similar lines — 件 for 衣服 and 外套, 条 for 裤子, 裙子 and 围巾, 双 for the paired 鞋, 袜子 and 手套, and 顶 just for hats. The Chinese measure word finder will confirm any noun you are unsure about.

Trace the guided strokes first, then write each word unaided in the blank squares. For extra repetition on the trickier characters, print blank 田字格 writing grid paper and keep going.

Frequently asked questions

Is this worksheet free to download as a PDF?

Yes. The Clothes & Wardrobe worksheet is free to print or save as a PDF, with no account or email needed. Press Print / Download PDF: on a computer the PDF opens ready to print or save, and on a phone it goes to your share sheet. A4 or US Letter follows your country.

What level is this worksheet?

It suits learners from about HSK 4. That is an editorial estimate for the Clothes & Wardrobe topic, not an official HSK word list, so a few of its 12 words may be harder. Each word prints with tone-marked pinyin and an English meaning to help.

Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like — it's free. For a class set, press Change the words and open More options to add an answer key, a class line or a dictation page; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Test turns the sheet into a quiz.

Can I change the words or use traditional characters?

Yes. Press Change the words to open this sheet in the generator, then add, remove or replace words, up to 20 per sheet. Set Characters to Traditional to switch the whole sheet to traditional characters; a word with no verified traditional form stays as you typed it.

How should I practice with this worksheet?

Trace the gray guides first, saying each word aloud, then cover the model and write the characters from memory in the blank boxes. Scan the sheet's QR code or open the Practice tab to watch each stroke animate, trace it, then recall it without a guide. Revisit missed words a day or two later.
