Chinese Countries & Nationalities Worksheet

Country names are a bargain in Chinese: learn eight of them and one extra character, and you can state any nationality on this page. This free printable worksheet gives you 国家 plus seven countries and two 人 words in 田字格 (tián zì gé) tracing grids with pinyin above each entry. Print it or save the PDF, with no signup.

Country plus 人 equals nationality

There is no separate word for Chinese, American or German as a nationality. You take the country and add 人: 中国人, 美国人, 英国人, 法国人, 德国人, 韩国人. The rule survives the one country on this sheet that has no 国 in its name — Japan is 日本, and a Japanese person is 日本人. 外国人 works the same way, built on 外国, the outside country. Two words on this page, 中国人 and 外国人, give you the pattern in your own handwriting.

Languages follow a different rule

Do not extend 人 logic to languages. Most take the first character of the country plus 语: 法语, 德语, 韩语, 日语, 英语 — not 英国语. Chinese itself is the exception you meet first: it is 中文 or 汉语, never 中国语. Keeping the two patterns apart is what separates 我是英国人 from 我说英语, and you will need both in the same conversation.

While you trace, look at 国: the border 囗 with 玉 (jade) inside, a treasure inside a boundary. Every country name here except 日本 uses it, so one character earns its keep six times over. The full word table with pinyin sits below. For more repetition, print blank 田字格 grid paper, or make your own country list in the Chinese worksheet generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is this worksheet free to download as a PDF?

Yes. The Countries & Nationalities worksheet is free to print or save as a PDF, with no account or email needed. Press Print / Download PDF: on a computer the PDF opens ready to print or save, and on a phone it goes to your share sheet. A4 or US Letter follows your country.

What level is this worksheet?

It suits learners from about HSK 2. That is an editorial estimate for the Countries & Nationalities topic, not an official HSK word list, so a few of its 10 words may be harder. Each word prints with tone-marked pinyin and an English meaning to help.

Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like — it's free. For a class set, press Change the words and open More options to add an answer key, a class line or a dictation page; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Test turns the sheet into a quiz.

Can I change the words or use traditional characters?

Yes. Press Change the words to open this sheet in the generator, then add, remove or replace words, up to 20 per sheet. Set Characters to Traditional to switch the whole sheet to traditional characters; a word with no verified traditional form stays as you typed it.

How should I practice with this worksheet?

Trace the gray guides first, saying each word aloud, then cover the model and write the characters from memory in the blank boxes. Scan the sheet's QR code or open the Practice tab to watch each stroke animate, trace it, then recall it without a guide. Revisit missed words a day or two later.
