Numbers are only useful once they attach to something, so this sheet keeps counting, calendars, clocks and prices together: 零 through 十, then 百 and 千, then 年, 月, 日, 号, 星期, 今天, 明天, 昨天, 上午, 下午, 点, 分钟, 钱, 元, 块 and 多少.
Two ways to say two
二 (èr) and 两 (liǎng) both mean two and they are not interchangeable. 二 is the counting number that reads out digits, dates and ordinals, as in 二月 and 十二. 两 goes in front of a measure word or a unit: 两个人, 两点, 两千. Learners who default to 二 everywhere are understood, but the mistake is audible to any listener.
Written form, spoken form
Dates and prices each hide a pair like that. A calendar prints 十月一日, while people say 十月一号 — 日 (rì) for the page, 号 (hào) for the mouth. A price tag prints 20 元 (yuán) and the person at the till says 二十块 (kuài). Clock time adds a third distinction: the hour is 点 and the minute on the clock is a bare 分, while 分钟 measures a length of time, so 两点十分 is ten past two and 十分钟 is ten minutes long.
Trace each row, cover it, and write the character again from memory. Count out loud in sequence while you write, because numbers only become automatic in the mouth.
