Chinese Drinks Worksheet: Tea, Coffee & More

Ten drinks, one printable page: 饮料, 水, 茶, 咖啡, 牛奶, 奶茶, 果汁, 可乐, 啤酒 and 矿泉水. Each appears in 田字格 (tián zì gé) tracing grids with pinyin above, free to print or save as a PDF with no signup. The word table with pinyin and meanings follows below.

The 口 on the left is a sound, not a mouth

咖啡, 可乐 and 啤酒 all came into Chinese from other languages, and you can see it in the characters. 咖, 啡 and 啤 each carry 口, which Chinese often adds to mark a character that is being used purely for its sound rather than its meaning. So 咖啡 is not coffee-flavored mouth; it is just kāfēi written down. 可乐 skipped the radical but got a happy accident of meaning instead, since the characters read as something like can be enjoyable.

Radicals that actually tell you something

The rest of the set is more literal. 茶 wears 艹, the grass radical, because tea is a leaf. 汁 in 果汁 and 酒 in 啤酒 both take 氵, the three-drop water radical, and 泉 in 矿泉水 is a spring with 水 sitting right at the bottom. 奶 takes 女 on the left, the same component you see in words about mothers and nursing — which is why 奶茶 reads as milk plus tea.

One more thing to practice out loud while you trace: drinks need measure words. Use 一杯 for a cup or glass of 水, 茶, 咖啡 or 牛奶, 一瓶 for a bottle of 啤酒 or 矿泉水, and 一罐 for a can. If you want more grids, print blank 田字格 paper, or check any measure word you are unsure about with the Chinese measure word finder.

Frequently asked questions

Is this worksheet free to download as a PDF?

Yes. The Drinks & Beverages worksheet is free to print or save as a PDF, with no account or email needed. Press Print / Download PDF: on a computer the PDF opens ready to print or save, and on a phone it goes to your share sheet. A4 or US Letter follows your country.

What level is this worksheet?

It suits learners from about HSK 3. That is an editorial estimate for the Drinks & Beverages topic, not an official HSK word list, so a few of its 10 words may be harder. Each word prints with tone-marked pinyin and an English meaning to help.

Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like — it's free. For a class set, press Change the words and open More options to add an answer key, a class line or a dictation page; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Test turns the sheet into a quiz.

Can I change the words or use traditional characters?

Yes. Press Change the words to open this sheet in the generator, then add, remove or replace words, up to 20 per sheet. Set Characters to Traditional to switch the whole sheet to traditional characters; a word with no verified traditional form stays as you typed it.

How should I practice with this worksheet?

Trace the gray guides first, saying each word aloud, then cover the model and write the characters from memory in the blank boxes. Scan the sheet's QR code or open the Practice tab to watch each stroke animate, trace it, then recall it without a guide. Revisit missed words a day or two later.
