Chinese Travel & Directions Worksheet

Route words, vehicles and destinations sit on one page here: 左, 右, 前, 后, the four compass points, 直行 (zhí xíng) and 转弯 (zhuǎn wān) for what to do at a 路口, then 车站, 地铁, 公共汽车, 出租车, 火车, 飞机, 机场, 酒店 and 护照.

The compass runs in a different order

English recites north, south, east, west. Chinese recites 东南西北 (dōng nán xī běi), starting in the east and going clockwise. Learn the four in that order and they stop blurring together. A trap hides in the first two: read as dōng xī, 东西 is east and west, but the same two characters read dōng xi mean thing or stuff, which is why 买东西 is going shopping rather than a geography exercise.

Most transport words decode themselves

地铁 is ground plus iron, an underground railway. 出租车 is a rented vehicle, 公共汽车 is 公共 (public) plus 汽车 (car), and 站 is both the noun station and the verb to stand, which is what you do while waiting at one. One word refuses to cooperate: 酒店 reads as wine shop and means hotel, so learn it as a sign you recognize rather than a sum of its parts.

Trace the guided strokes first, then write each word from memory and say it aloud. Cut the list to the words for one specific trip before printing. Long words such as 公共汽车 usually need more room, so keep blank 田字格 grid paper beside the sheet, or start from a different theme in the printable worksheet generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is this worksheet free to download as a PDF?

Yes. The Travel, Directions & Transportation worksheet is free to print or save as a PDF, with no account or email needed. Press Print / Download PDF: on a computer the PDF opens ready to print or save, and on a phone it goes to your share sheet. A4 or US Letter follows your country.

What level is this worksheet?

It suits learners from about HSK 2. That is an editorial estimate for the Travel, Directions & Transportation topic, not an official HSK word list, so a few of its 24 words may be harder. Each word prints with tone-marked pinyin and an English meaning to help.

Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like — it's free. For a class set, press Change the words and open More options to add an answer key, a class line or a dictation page; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Test turns the sheet into a quiz.

Can I change the words or use traditional characters?

Yes. Press Change the words to open this sheet in the generator, then add, remove or replace words, up to 20 per sheet. Set Characters to Traditional to switch the whole sheet to traditional characters; a word with no verified traditional form stays as you typed it.

How should I practice with this worksheet?

Trace the gray guides first, saying each word aloud, then cover the model and write the characters from memory in the blank boxes. Scan the sheet's QR code or open the Practice tab to watch each stroke animate, trace it, then recall it without a guide. Revisit missed words a day or two later.
