Ten words from the machinery of Chinese news: 新闻, 媒体, 记者, 报道, 采访, 观点, 消息, 反应, 传播 and 社会.
记 is to record, so 记者 is one who records: a reporter. The suffix is fully productive — 作者 writes, 读者 reads, 学者 studies, 消费者 consumes. Spot 者 at the end of an unfamiliar word and you already know it names a person. 报 does similar work at the front of a word: 报道 is to report, and the same 报 turns up in 报纸, 报告 and 报警.
观点 (guān diǎn) is a standpoint, the formal word an article attributes to a source. 看法 is your everyday opinion, the thing a friend asks for. 意见 leans toward a suggestion or a complaint, so 提意见 is to raise an objection rather than to share a thought. Register separates the three more sharply than meaning does. One more pair to keep straight: 采访 is a journalist interviewing a source, while a job interview is 面试, and 报道 covers both the act of reporting and the finished piece.
Trace each guided row, cover the model, and rewrite it. Reading a short news item aloud straight after the sheet fixes these words faster than repetition alone. Carry on to the HSK 5 lessons hub, or paste a headline into the Chinese text analyzer to see which of the ten it uses.
Words on this worksheet: 新闻 (xīnwén) — news; 媒体 (méitǐ) — media; 记者 (jìzhě) — Reporter; 报道 (bàodào) — report; 采访 (cǎifǎng) — interview; 观点 (guāndiǎn) — viewpoint; 消息 (xiāoxi) — message; 反应 (fǎnyìng) — reaction; 传播 (chuánbō) — spread; 社会 (shèhuì) — Socioty. Hear these words in beginner Mandarin songs. It names the person who performs an action, much as -er does in English. 记 is to record and 记者 is a reporter; the same pattern gives 作者, 读者, 学者 and 消费者. Recognising it lets you decode words you have never seen.
观点 is a formal standpoint, the kind an article attributes to someone. 看法 is an everyday opinion or view. 意见 tips toward a suggestion or an objection, which is why 提意见 means to raise a complaint rather than to share a thought.
No, though both translate as interview. 采访 is journalistic: a reporter gathering material from a source. 面试 is the hiring kind. Using 采访 for a job interview is a common error at this level and reads as clearly wrong to a native speaker.
Because reading speed depends on instant recognition, and copying a character is the most reliable way to build it. Words such as 报道 and 传播 look similar to their neighbours in a headline, and writing them makes the differences stick.
