Frequently asked questions
Can I always use 个 if I forget the classifier?
个 is common and can sometimes keep a conversation moving, but it is not equally natural with every noun. Learn high-use noun phrases as chunks and confirm an unfamiliar noun in a reliable dictionary or classifier tool.
Why do some nouns accept more than one classifier?
A classifier can highlight a different shape, container, unit, or interpretation. This workbook gives the intended everyday sense for each task rather than claiming one classifier is possible in every context.
Should I say 二杯 or 两杯?
For an ordinary quantity directly before a classifier, use 两: 两杯茶. Use 二 in counting, many numbers, dates, labels, and ordinals such as 第二.
Do I need to know characters first?
No. The workbook supplies Hanzi, tone-marked pinyin, and English. Speaking from pinyin is appropriate while you begin noticing the characters.
