- 天冷了。 · Tiān lěng le. · It has gotten cold now. (Sentence-final 了 highlights a change from the earlier situation.)
- 我不喝咖啡了。 · Wǒ bù hē kāfēi le. · I don’t drink coffee anymore. (不……了 contrasts the new situation with what was true before.)
Frequently asked questions
Does 了 mean past tense?
Not by itself. Verb-suffix 了 is commonly used with past events, but its core job here is perfective viewpoint: presenting a bounded event as a whole. Time words and context locate the event in time.
Are there really only two uses of 了?
No. These are two essential beginner jobs, not a complete theory. Position, verb type, object, aspect, and discourse context can create cases that need later study.
Can I identify the job only from where 了 is printed?
Position is a strong beginner clue, but it is not always enough. In a short sentence, a postverbal 了 may also be sentence-final, so meaning and context still matter.
Is 了 always removed in a negative sentence?
No. For the bounded-event negative taught here, use 没(有) + verb without perfective 了. But sentence-final 了 can remain in a change contrast such as 我不喝咖啡了, “I don’t drink coffee anymore.”

The workbook teaches two deliberately narrow beginner contrasts and states where the shortcut stops, rather than presenting 了 as a one-word tense equivalent.
