Chinese Workbooks for Kids, by Age
By Mei Lin
These free PDFs are for young children starting Mandarin, at home or in class, and for the grown-up sitting with them. Bao the panda leads the activities: tracing, colouring, counting, pointing and saying words out loud.
Pick by age in the rows below. A good place to start for ages 5 to 9 is the school book, and for ages 3 to 5 the first-words activity book, which uses colouring and matching in place of writing. You don't need to speak Chinese yourself, because the activity books give pinyin and English for every word.

Classroom words, teacher phrases and polite words with Bao the panda, for ages 5 to 9. Your child needs no Chinese to begin, and it's a good fit before a Chinese class or a bilingual school.

Frequently asked questions
What ages are these Chinese worksheets for?
From about 2 to 10. The rows on this page go by stage: Little Listeners (2–4), First Words (4–6), First Readers (6–8) and Story Readers (8–10), then festival books and books for parents.
Do I need to speak Chinese to use them with my child?
No. In the activity books every word has pinyin and English, and the tips explain one small thing at a time, ready to read out loud. To hear a sound, tap it on SayMei's free pinyin chart. The grown-up reads, and the child points, colours and copies.
Who needs the SayMei account?
The grown-up. The PDFs are free with an account, so a parent or teacher signs up and prints them. Children don't need an account or a screen to use a printed workbook.
Which book suits a child who already speaks Chinese at home?
Choose by what your child can read. First Readers and Story Readers have sight-word readers, first characters and a first diary.
