HSC Chinese Practice: Beginners, Continuers and Extension

The HSC is the Year 12 exam in New South Wales, and Chinese is offered at several levels. These books cover three: Beginners, at about HSK 1 to 2, Continuers, at about HSK 3 to 4, and Extension, taken alongside Continuers at about HSK 4 to 5. Each has an oral and a written exam.
By the end of the book for your course you have practised its oral questions, listening, reading and writing with model answers, and at Extension the issues and text response. All three have free audio.

Frequently asked questions
Which HSC Chinese book should I use?
The one for your course: Beginners at about HSK 1 to 2, Continuers at about HSK 3 to 4, or Extension at about HSK 4 to 5. Each covers its course's oral and written exam.
Is HSC Chinese Extension taken on its own?
No. Extension is taken alongside Chinese Continuers, so many Extension students use both books. The Extension book covers four issues, text response, persuasive and reflective writing and the oral.
Do the HSC books have pinyin?
The Beginners book prints pinyin with simplified characters, and every oral and listening line has English. In Continuers and Extension the key phrases have pinyin and English, and the answers and audio script are in the key.
