YCT and CCCC Practice for Kids
By Mei Lin
The YCT is China's Chinese test for school-age children, with written levels and a speaking test, and the CCCC is Taiwan's children's Chinese certification. These books cover YCT 1 and 2, YCT Speaking Beginner and Intermediate, and CCCC Sprouting, for children of about 6 to 12.
YCT 1 covers 80 words and YCT 2 another 70. By the end of a book a child knows that level's words and has tried its question types and a mini practice test. Grown-ups don't need to speak Chinese, because pinyin is printed throughout and the free audio reads every line.

Frequently asked questions
Which YCT level should my child start with?
YCT 1, unless they already know its 80 words. YCT 2 Practice for Kids adds the 70 new YCT 2 words for ages 7 to 10, and its introduction points back to YCT 1 if the words still feel new.
What is the YCT Speaking test like?
The children repeat, answer questions and talk about pictures. The two speaking books turn each task type into games, with picture prompts, question cards, a mini practice and audio for every line.
What is the CCCC?
Taiwan's Children's Chinese Competency Certification. CCCC Sprouting Practice for Kids has picture cards, listening and reading in its question types and a mini practice test, in Traditional characters, with zhuyin on the word cards.
