Free Chinese Worksheet Generator

Your child just started learning Mandarin, or your tutoring student needs handwriting practice beyond what the textbook provides. You could spend an evening drawing grid boxes by hand — or enter a word list and get a ready-to-print page in seconds.

The free Chinese Worksheet Generator accepts English, Chinese, or pinyin and automatically turns the most common Chinese matches into a printable worksheet with tracing boxes, pinyin, meanings, and practice prompts. It runs in your browser with no signup, and the full builder — the Chinese Worksheet Studio — keeps every option on one page. Every custom sheet, ready-made topic pack, and HSK 1–6 workbook is free to preview, print, download, or email.

How it works

Enter the words you want to practice, separated by spaces, commas or new lines. The page starts with 你好 谢谢 再见; type Chinese, pinyin or English and the language is detected for you. The worksheet builds as you type, and you can choose a different meaning whenever a word has alternatives.

Simplified, traditional, or both

Set the script to Simplified, Traditional, or Both. Traditional sheets use standard traditional forms such as 裡 and 颱風, and the headword, tracing rows, stroke diagrams, and on-screen practice all follow that choice. Both shows the simplified and traditional headwords together while the practice rows stay traditional. Words with no verified traditional form are kept exactly as you typed them.

Grids, stroke order, and teacher packets

Pick 田字格 (tián zì gé), 米字格 (mǐ zì gé), 井字格 (jǐng zì gé), or a plain square, then a layout: Trace (every box traced), Practice (traces that fade to blank) or Test (pinyin and meaning only, with an answer key). Stroke order can be a numbered guide or step by step, which prints the complete stroke sequence for every character from the hanzi-writer dataset. Characters the dataset does not cover say so on the page.

More options adds an answer key page, a dictation page of numbered blank grids and a class line; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Everything prints on A4 or US Letter, and every page ends with “Made free at saymei.app” and a QR code that opens the same sheet for online practice.

Who it's for and what you get

Parents, tutors, homeschoolers, and teachers get the formatting handled, so the time goes into teaching. Every sheet leaves room for tracing and freehand repetition, which is how muscle memory forms.

Once the sheet is ready, hand the same vocabulary to live speaking practice with Mei Lin, SayMei's AI tutor, so learners say the words as well as write them. For blank grids you can print anytime, try the Chinese writing paper page. You can also browse the full index of all free SayMei Chinese learning tools, or find the words you still have to learn with the HSK Gap Checker.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Chinese worksheet generator free?

Yes, with no account, email or daily limit. Build worksheets from your own words, more than 1,000 ready-made packs or the complete HSK 1–6 writing workbooks, then save them as PDFs or print them. Choose A4 or US Letter before you print. A free SayMei account is only needed to save words to SayMei Flashcards or to keep your worksheet history across devices.

What are 田字格 (tián zì gé), 米字格 (mǐ zì gé) and 井字格 (jǐng zì gé) grids?

They are guide grids for writing characters in proportion. 田字格 (tián zì gé) splits each box into four with a center cross, 米字格 (mǐ zì gé) adds two diagonals, and 井字格 (jǐng zì gé) divides it into thirds. The generator offers all three plus a plain square; 田字格 is the default and suits most learners.

Can I make traditional Chinese worksheets?

Yes. Set Characters to Traditional and the words, tracing rows, stroke diagrams and Practice tab all switch script, with forms like 裡 (lǐ, inside) and 颱風 (táifēng, typhoon). A word with no verified traditional form stays exactly as you typed it, and the sheet tells you how many words that affects.

Can I print copies for my class?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like — it's free. For a class set, open More options to add an answer key, a class line or a dictation page; the Student PDF leaves the key out. Copy link gives you a link that reopens the same worksheet.

How do I make a Chinese character worksheet?

Type up to 20 words or short phrases in Chinese characters, pinyin or English, separated by spaces, commas or new lines. The sheet updates as you type, with tone-marked pinyin and an English meaning for each word. Pick Trace, Practice or Test, then press Print / Download PDF.

Can the worksheet show stroke order?

Yes. In More options, set Stroke order to Guide for a numbered stroke strip above each character, or to Step by step to build each character one stroke per box. The stroke data comes from the open Make Me a Hanzi dataset, which covers over 9,000 characters; in Taiwan a few traditional characters follow a different order.

Can I practice writing Chinese characters online?

Yes. The Practice tab turns any worksheet into on-screen practice with your finger, stylus or mouse: watch each character animate, trace it twice, then write it from memory. It checks every stroke as you draw, shows a hint after two misses, and sorts your characters into New, Learning and Known on this browser.
