HSK 1 Chinese Workbooks

By Mei Lin

HSK 1 is the first level of the new HSK (HSK 3.0), China's Chinese proficiency test. It covers 300 words, pinyin and the four tones, and basics such as 是, 有, 吗 and 了. Most learners start it with no Chinese at all.

By the end of HSK 1 you can greet people, say who you are, order something and read short signs and messages. The books below take you there: a 12-lesson course book and its workbook, reading, vocabulary and writing practice, and three mock tests with free audio for the exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free HSK 1 PDF?

Yes, several. The HSK 1 Course Book (109 pages) teaches the level, the HSK 1 Workbook (75 pages) has exercises for all 12 lessons, and the Complete HSK 1 Workbook Pack (127 pages) puts reading practice, vocabulary, guided writing and a full mock test in one PDF.

How many words are in HSK 1?

300 on the new HSK 3.0 syllabus. The course book teaches all of them. The HSK 1 Vocabulary Recall & Speaking Workbook then practises them in ten themed sets to learn, recall from memory and say out loud.

Are there HSK 1 mock tests with audio?

Three. Each has 40 questions, 20 listening and 20 reading, in about 40 minutes, with free listening audio, a transcript and an answer key. HSK 1 Listening Practice adds four more listening sections: 80 questions with free audio.

In what order should I use the HSK 1 books?

Work through the course book and the workbook one lesson at a time, and use the reading practice and vocabulary books alongside them. Take a mock test near the end, practise whatever cost you the most points, then sit another.

Does HSK 1 need handwriting?

Our HSK 1 mock tests follow the new format, with listening and reading only. If you want to write anyway, the HSK 1 Guided Writing Workbook goes from strokes and character parts to sentences and a short self-introduction.
